Patrick Galant Cairanne 2018, A.C. Cairanne
Rhône, France$18.95
Solid South Rhone, in this case, from the Cairanne AC. Plenty of herbs and pepper accenting the black fruit. Tannin seems well resolved, I see no reason to hold this much beyond 2023. Fairly priced. Tasted Feb 2023.
Château Hauchat 2019, Ac Fronsac
Bordeaux, France$18.95
Fine little right-banker here, Nice ripe fruit, well-dialed in oak, nothing out of place. Value proposition is high: To put some context around this, for the price of one bottle of Petrus, you can buy about 90 bottles of this Hauchat. No brainer when you put it that way, no? Tasted Dec 2023.
Hollick Old Vines Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, Coonawarra
South Australia, Australia$20.25
Impressive Cabernet Sauvignon from well-known cab sauv growing region of Coonawarra. A fairly big and ripe wine, but not at all over the top. Complex with well-judged oak and a long finish, I really like this, Drinking well now, though I think it should hold for a few years. Tasted Sep 2023.
Castello Di Collemassari Montecucco Rosso Riserva 2016, D.O.C.
Tuscany, Italy$22.95
Excellent Sangiovese-based wine, from Montecucco, south of Montalcino. Hope that we see more wines from this region. tasted June 2022.
Castello Di Gabbiano Chianti Classico Docg Cavaliere D'oro 2019
Tuscany, Italy$21.05
Solid Chianti Classico from Gabianno, with the requisite red cherry fruit and crisp acidity, Light tannin. Missing the vibrancy and complexity of better CC, but fairly priced (esp when on sale). I would drink this over the next couple of years. Tasted Feb 2023.
Villa Trasqua Chianti Classico 2018, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$19.95
Lovely Chianti Classico here. Authentic Sangiovese character, without need to over-wood a fine wine to make it taste more Bordeaux-like. Joyous stuff here. Drinking well now, but no rush I should think. Tasted May 2024.
Château Bouscassé Madiran 2016, A.P.
Southwest, France$22.95
Sturdy, stern, structured red from Alain Brumont, yet it is not without its charms. Subtle spice/ herbs support dense fruit, with good complexity and a firms finish with hint of tea. This wine really grew on me. Very nice. Drinking nicely now, should easily hold a few more years. I think that I picked this up on sale...whatever, at $23 list price, it is stellar value. Tasted Oct 2024.
Malivoire Pinot Gris 2020, VQA Beamsville Bench
Ontario, Canada$21.95
Third straight vintage I have had this wine from Malivoire and the '20 is another winner. Despite the hot, dry growing conditions, this is fresh and crisp. Perfect on a warm summer evening. Tasted Jul 2022.
Las Veletas Grenache/Carignan/Mourvèdre 2019, Valle Del Maule
Maule Valley, Chile$19.95
Pale garnet in colour, but don't let that fool you. This is packed with flavour and complexity. Like a CdR but not so much of the south France. Soft tannin and delish. For nearer term consumption I should think. Fine value indeed. Tasted Dec 2022.
13th Street Winery Expression Series Cabernet Merlot 2020, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$19.95
mid-weight, darkly fruited with some noted but well-judged oak, Certainly cool climate but not at all unripe, thanks to the excellent vintage. Add in the deft winemaking hand of JP Colas, and here you have a fine reasonably priced Niagara red. For current consumption or holding a few years. Tasted Nov 2022.
