Invicta Xinomavro 2019, Amyndaio, Macedonia
Macedonia, Greece$17.95
A young wine, with fresh red fruit but one that didn't really excite me. Nothing wrong with the wine, just not really that captivating. Maybe too young? Tasted Aug 2021.
Folklore Cabernet/Merlot 2018, Western Australia
Western Australia, Australia$14.75
A pleasant Cab-Merlot, with cherry ripe fruit, soft tannin, a hint of herbs and a touch of sweetness on the finish. Decent value (what with current inflation) for any everyday wine. Tasted May 2022.
La Nerthe Les Cassagnes Côtes Du Rhône Villages 2018, Ap
Rhône, France$24.95
From well-known Chateauneuf produce Chateau des Nerthe, this CdR Villages is made from organically grown Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Very open, and approachable with all of the expected herb-infused ripe fruit flavours one would expect of the region. What strikes me is the impeccable balance here. Tannin, alcohol, acids , ripeness - nothing is out of balance. I don't get the impression that this wine is intended for ageing - delicious and irresistible right now. Tasted Oct 2021.
Boutari Grande Reserve Naoussa 2016, Pdo
Naoussa, Greece$20.75
The release price of this '16 Xinomavro was up $6 from last vintage that I tried - the price has since been reduced. Fruit of course leans to the red spectrum, with some sour cherry and dried red fruit here, along with some earthy notes. I find that the '16 seems to have a bit more noted oak than prior vintages. This, along with the still noted tannin, leads me to suggest that this wine needs a couple of more years in bottle, where I think that it shows better. Wait until 2023...should keep another 5 years beyond that. Tasted Sep 2021.
Chateau Trois Moulins Haut Medoc 2016, A.C.
Bordeaux, France$23.95
A very fine Bordeaux here from a stellar vintage. What strikes flavours. Nothing dominates or overwhelms the senses. The fruit is perfectly ripened, the acidity is well judged, oak is so nicely dialed in as to be unnoticeable. Just goes to show that really good red Bordeaux can be found at a reasonable price. Drinking nicely now with some aeration, probably better in another 12-18 months. Should keep a to see its 10th birthday. Tasted Dec 2021.
Chateau De Montfaucon Cotes Du Rhone 2017, A.C.
Rhône, France$19.95
Labelled as simply "Cotes du Rhone" but the wine is more akin to a fine Rasteau or Vacqueyras. Complex, balance, long finishing with perfectly ripened fruit. Plenty of spice and wild herbs backing that lovely fruit. Hanging on just fine at five years of age, this is indeed a lovely wine and an outstanding value. Not the first excellent wine I have had from Montfaucon. Tasted Sep 2022.
Clos Henri Petit Clos Pinot Noir 2019, Marlborough, South Island
Marlborough, New Zealand$27.95
Made from younger vines and aged in large (7500 L) vats, this wine is all about pinot noir fruit. Bright, exuberant, riper than say a Burg or Niagara pinot, but balanced.. Red fruit, chrry, cranberry come to mind, with a hint of smokiness. Not for long ageing, just delicious right now, Take that, over-priced Burgundy. Tasted Nov 2021.
M. Chapoutier Les Vignes De Bila Haut Côtes Du Roussillon Villages 2020, Ac
Midi, France$16.95
An easy-to-like red here from Chapoutier, with the requisite meaty/peppery accented dark fruit one might expect from the Roussillon. Soft, not super complex, but all you could want in $16 wine. A step up from the so-so 2018. Tasted April 2022.
Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet 2019
South Australia, Australia$19.45
Big, rich, dense...as one might expect. Not a bad thing, of course, this is a very well made wine and a delicious one too. Drink at will....or at the office. No need to wait for the boss to say it's ok. Tasted Feb 2024.
Valle Dell'acate Il Frappato 2019, Doc Sicilia
Sicily, Italy$24.95
Very pale colour, somewhere between a Chianti and a rose. This is all about red fruit - sweet cherries and strawberries come to mind. Aromatic, light-bodied and vibrant, with hints of smoke on the finish. Virtually no tannin. Charming and delicious. Chill a wee bit and enjoy in the short term. Tasted Feb 2022.
