Clos Henri Petit Clos Pinot Noir 2019, Marlborough, South Island
Marlborough, New Zealand$27.95
Made from younger vines and aged in large (7500 L) vats, this wine is all about pinot noir fruit. Bright, exuberant, riper than say a Burg or Niagara pinot, but balanced.. Red fruit, chrry, cranberry come to mind, with a hint of smokiness. Not for long ageing, just delicious right now, Take that, over-priced Burgundy. Tasted Nov 2021.
M. Chapoutier Les Vignes De Bila Haut Côtes Du Roussillon Villages 2020, Ac
Midi, France$16.95
An easy-to-like red here from Chapoutier, with the requisite meaty/peppery accented dark fruit one might expect from the Roussillon. Soft, not super complex, but all you could want in $16 wine. A step up from the so-so 2018. Tasted April 2022.
Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet 2019
South Australia, Australia$19.45
Big, rich, dense...as one might expect. Not a bad thing, of course, this is a very well made wine and a delicious one too. Drink at will....or at the office. No need to wait for the boss to say it's ok. Tasted Feb 2024.
Valle Dell'acate Il Frappato 2019, Doc Sicilia
Sicily, Italy$24.95
Very pale colour, somewhere between a Chianti and a rose. This is all about red fruit - sweet cherries and strawberries come to mind. Aromatic, light-bodied and vibrant, with hints of smoke on the finish. Virtually no tannin. Charming and delicious. Chill a wee bit and enjoy in the short term. Tasted Feb 2022.
Château Courac Laudun Cotes Du Rhône Villages 2017, A.P.
Rhône, France$18.95
High impact wine, with loads of ripe fruit, spice, meaty notes, black pepper. Perhaps teetering on the brink on being over the top, but sure is attention grabbing, Works for me on a drab February eve. Tasted Feb 2022.
M. Chapoutier Belleruche Côtes Du Rhône Grenache/Syrah 2020
Rhône, France$15.55
As always, a solid CdR, as would be expected from M. Chapoutier. Fine value at $16 (though the regular price has crept up to almost $19 for the 2021). Not intended for anything more than short term ageing so enjoy in its youth. Tasted May 2023.
La Causa Cinsault/Pais/Carignan 2019, Itata Valley
Chile$22.95
Not often you see a Cinsault-dominated wine. and from Chile, too. A delicious and satisfying red, with silky tannin and lingering finish. All too easy to sip. No point holding this for any period of time, this is really good right now. Tasted March 2024.
Patrick Galant Cairanne 2018, A.C. Cairanne
Rhône, France$18.95
Solid South Rhone, in this case, from the Cairanne AC. Plenty of herbs and pepper accenting the black fruit. Tannin seems well resolved, I see no reason to hold this much beyond 2023. Fairly priced. Tasted Feb 2023.
Château Hauchat 2019, Ac Fronsac
Bordeaux, France$18.95
Fine little right-banker here, Nice ripe fruit, well-dialed in oak, nothing out of place. Value proposition is high: To put some context around this, for the price of one bottle of Petrus, you can buy about 90 bottles of this Hauchat. No brainer when you put it that way, no? Tasted Dec 2023.
Hollick Old Vines Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, Coonawarra
South Australia, Australia$20.25
Impressive Cabernet Sauvignon from well-known cab sauv growing region of Coonawarra. A fairly big and ripe wine, but not at all over the top. Complex with well-judged oak and a long finish, I really like this, Drinking well now, though I think it should hold for a few years. Tasted Sep 2023.
