Trius Red (The Icon) 2016, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$24.95
Great deal at only $25. Tried it tonight. Buy a few bottles and lay it down. John’s right, if this was priced at $50 no one would bat an eye.
Wolf Blass Gold Label Shiraz 2005, Barossa, South Australia
Australia$28.95
Poor test. Then most excellent.
Montes Alpha Syrah 2006, "Colchagua Valley, Apalta Vineyard"
Chile$19.95
Great wine for the price. I have paid far more for far less.
D'arenberg The Feral Fox Pinot Noir 2006, Adelaide Hills, South Australia
Australia$29.95
Quite good. But compared to the Tawse, and in the same price range, not even close.
Hidden Bench Terroir Caché Meritage 2006, VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$38.20
After many recommendations I finally bought this wine today. Although out of my normal snack bracket it IS a wonderful wine to savour and enjoy. Has a depth and complexity and length not usually associated with Ontario reds.
Hillebrand Trius Red 2007, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$22.95
Allowed it to decant for 2hrs. Quite a change over the course of two hours. Green/woodsy nose for the first hour, less pronounced later. Mild depth and richness, very tannic - it IS in the Bordeaux style. Everyone's advice is to cellar this wine. Will try again in a few years.
St. Hallett Blackwell Shiraz 2006, Barossa, South Australia
Australia$39.95
Enjoyed this rich, dark, brooding beauty last night with a well marbled rib-eye. It's a classic, big SHIRAZ so subtle it is not. I would recommend decanting at least one hour before consuming. While not the absolute best value, it drinks like a higher-end shiraz for 'only' $30.
Villa Maria Private Bin Pinot Noir 2009, Marlborough
New Zealand$19.95
This is a simply outstanding Pinot Noir for the money. I have been buying it for gifts recently to showcase what a New Zealand Pinot can taste like. It's a more full bodied Pinot (like Californians). The nose is wonderful. A great deal.
Domaine Belle Les Pierrelles Crozes Hermitage 2007, Ac
Rhône, France$22.95
I attempted to drink a highly rated Aussie Shiraz right after this and couldn't believe the contrast. This wine has an intense peppery nose. It is smooth and complex at the same time. I fear my big Shiraz days may be numbered as I quite preferred this French Syrah. I'm good for a case!
