Laborum Syrah 2005, Cafayate, Salta Bottle
Laborum Syrah 2005, Cafayate, Salta
Salta, Argentina
$21.95

This wine has quite a beautiful bright ruby color with just a subtle hint of bricking. The nose is full of red fruit - cassis and cherry with a fair amount of spice. With a bit of time in the glass I also picked up some dried fruit/prune. The palate is fruit foward, spicy, and quite woody and hot. It has some poise when it first hits your palate but the finish comes quickly, emphasising the wood and alcohol and some drying tannin. Nonetheless, I did enjoy this wine overall.

The nose is the most appealing characteristic of this wine which exudes sweet floral and pear notes with hints of toasted coconut and caramel. The palate is somewhat unrefined with a bitterness that crowds out a short burst of fruit and otherwise pleasant toasted oak and vanilla flavours. Its a nice wine but just doesn't come together the way a great Chardonnay can.

I'm with Szabo on this one. This is a rather basic new world style wine. I also find it mentholated with a medical cherry (cough syrup) core on the palate. It is smooth with little grip. The herbal notes add some character in the mid palate but otherwise there is nothing to get excited about here.

As others have noted, this wine is a nice value (though I'd have been disappointed had I paid 3x it's actual price!) with aromas of cassis, cherry, coffee and chocolate. The palate is dry and chewy with rich cherry and earthy undertones. I imagine it would be a nice match with red meat. In my view, it improves as it breaths a bit.

A fair amount of depth at this price. nice bouquet of raspberry and ripe blackberry, licorice and sweet earthiness. The palate is more subdued in terms of fruit but is nicely balanced, medium bodied and there is a lingering spicy finish.

There is a lot to like about this wine. It is very aromatic with typical lychee, pineapple, orange blossom and rose water aromas. It's quite full bodied for a white wine, well balanced with a decent finish. Unfortunately for me, the rose water flavours overwhelm the palate and finish leaving me with the impression I've just eaten a bar of pink soap. Its a well made wine but must love rose.

Enjoyed this with our Xmas turkey. Lemon-lime and green apple aromas and palate. Great acidity to offset the subtle sweetness. Nice medium long finish. A great pairing.

Solid Chianti. Deep cassis, plum, chocolate and herbal aromas also come through nicely on the palate. It's lithe but balanced - drinking nicely now but has the tannic structure to grow up some with a few years in the cellar. I enjoyed it with braised beef.

Nose of plum and cassis with a nice toasted layer and a touch of chocolate, herbs and mint. The palate is very concentrated dark berry with notable charred tarry notes. The balance is very good with a strong seem of acidity, chewy tannins and a medium long finish. The oak is perhaps a bit overdone, but this would be a happy accompaniment to a juicy steak.

Aromas of citrus, green apple and underripe pear with typical popcorn/clove smokiness. The palate shows a beautiful balance of fruit and smokey, nutty wood, great acidity and a long finish. There is a touch of heat on the finish but it's reigned in by the persistent fruit. Great chard and another in the list if wines I've enjoyed from this winery.
