Château Bégadanet 2005, Ac Médoc
Bordeaux, France$17.95
Very lovely aromas of cassis and red berry with a nice undertone of oak and subtle earthiness. The palate is very smooth and subtle, the fruit dominates but their are hints of oak and herbs. Nicely balanced and well suited for food but not something I would necessary drink for its own sake.
Adelaida Cellars Anna's Estate Vineyard Syrah 2007, Paso Robles
California, Usa$22.15
Herbal, earthy and leathery nose and palate. Core of sweetish dark berry. Intense and heavy but with nice structure and length.
Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc 2010, Marlborough
New Zealand$16.95
Aromas of pineapple and green apple flow through on the palate supported by a very juicy grapefruit acidity and a hint of typical grassiness. A nice everyday Sauvignon blanc.
Las Rocas Garnacha 2009, Do Calatayud
Spain$15.00
Tremendous value here. Loads of red fruit and peppery spice on the nose and palate supported by a subtle undercurrent of slightly underripe blackberry. The texture is smooth and supple and the finish medium and balanced.
Gigondas La Cave L'intense Gigondas 2007, Ac
Rhône, France$26.95
Disappointing. Definitely intense, but without much refinement. There is pepper and wood, but also lots of alcohol. It's drinkable but really low value at this price point. I'm shocked at the Decanter rating.
Chateau De Gourgazaud 2009, Minervois
Languedoc, France$12.95
There is no question that this is a great value. Lovely concentrated aromas of plum and cassis with a hint of vanilla. THe palate is very smooth with light fruit, low acid and very mellow tannins. A nice sipper but not a lot of mustard to hold up to food.
Porcupine Ridge Syrah 2010, Wo Swartland
South Africa$13.95
Dark cherry-mocha aromas match the rich dense color of this wine. The palate is dense with smoky sweetness. Full bodied but the alcohol has integrated nicely with an extra year in the cellar. The mouthfeel is silky but with a nice balanced acidity to give some structure. Medium length. A Great value and just plain enjoyable.
Luigi Bosca Single Vineyard Malbec 2008, Luján De Cuyo, Mendoza
Mendoza, Argentina$21.95
A very nicely structured wine with moderate complexity. The nose is pleasant but not overly revealing. The palate is warm and earthy with a nice core of fruit and a lengthy though somewhat alcohol infused finish. I tasted something resembling pitch, which threw me off at first but this softened to herbal / woody notes with time in the glass. I enjoyed the 2006 vintage immensely after a year or two in the cellar and I expect that this 2008 will impress even more after a little more bottle time.
Angels Gate Riesling 2009, VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$13.95
Tart green apple, lime and underripe pear aromas. Palate has only the slightest touch of sweetness but is otherwise quite racy and mouthwateringly tart. Medium citrusy, green apple finish. Good everyday value.
Robert Mondavi Fumé Blanc 2009, Napa Valley
California, Usa$22.95
Citrus aromas with a creamy edge. Palate shows more citrus, and orange blossom with smokey herbs and a subtle impression of sweetness. Nicely rounded in the mouth with a medium-long finish.
