Lento Lamezia Riserva 2010, Doc
Calabria, Italy$15.75
Gotta love the honest purity of this wine. Loads of dried red and black fruit with oak driven complexity adding a subtle earthy spiciness. It's super juicy giving it quite a lively palate, and the tannins are very silky offering such a nice mouthfeel. It's just a pleasure to sip and a great addition to the table.
Ruffino Chianti Classico Riserva Ducale 2008, Tuscany
Italy$24.95
Easy drinking chianti here. Aromas of blackberry and raspberry framed by a good dose of olive and scorched earth. It has bright acidity, medium body and medium spicy finish. Not a lot of fruit on the palate but and enjoyable all-round accompaniment to food.
Señorío De P. Peciña Reserva 2009, Doca Rioja
Rioja, Spain$32.95
The classic flavours and aromas are all there, but they didn't hang together well for me.
Fielding Estate Bottled Chardonnay 2013, VQA Beamsville Bench
Ontario, Canada$18.15
Incredible value in beautifully poised ON chardonnay that hits all the fruit, toasted oak and minerality one would hope for.
Quinta De Saes Red 2013, Doc Dão
Dão, Portugal$15.75
Quaffable indeed. Light but with great concentration of dark fruit and a bit of earthiness. Excellent, refreshing balance. Essentially zero tannins. Medium finish.
Errazuriz Aconcagua Alto Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, Aconcagua Valley
Aconcagua Valley, Chile$21.95
Very generous wine in all aspects but so nicely integrated it doesn't overwhelm.
Lua Cheia Old Vines Red 2014, Doc Douro
Douro, Portugal$14.95
Serious value for money. Great fruit unadulterated by oak or sugar enhancements that you typically find at this price. Structure and depth are solid, soft tannins and mouthfeel ... quaff-able.
Mazzei Ser Lapo Riserva Chianti Classico 2011, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$23.95
Took a bit of time to open, but then a very poised wine emerged with subtle layers of red fruit, spice and herbs reveal themselves on quite a firm bed of acidity. Acidity is off-putting at first, but seems to soften a bit with time in the glass. A wine deserving / needing some contemplation.
Boschendal 1685 Chardonnay 2015, Coastal Region
Coastal Region, South Africa$15.95
Great value. Oak is present but relatively restrained to give enough richness and complexity while staying nicely balanced on a vibrant frame.
Bodegas Castaño Hécula Monastrell 2009, Do Yecla
Spain$12.60
Whoa indeed! Lots of depth here, bordering on astonishing for under $12. The nose is full of toasty, herbal character with a core of rich dark berry and prune. The palate delivers too with great structure, balance and finish. A nice sipper and well made for food. Tasted March 2013.
