Belle Glos Meiomi Pinot Noir 2009, Sonoma Valley/Monterey County/Santa Barbara County
California, Usa$26.95
Ok. So this is a commercialized wine to be sure. It's sweet (a bit too sweet), oaky, full of herbaceous and mocha flavours and finishes hot. That said, it's quite tasty, silky in the mid-palate and likely to please on purely hedonistic grounds. At this price, it's hard to expect much more in a Pinot, though if you've experienced what Pinot is capable of you'll like be disappointed.
Aromo Private Reserve Carménère 2009, Do Maule Valley
Maule Valley, Chile$12.95
I bought this on a whim after witnessing a couple almost clear the entire vibtages inventory at my local lcbo and whispering to another customer that it was an amazing deal. I was curious but ultimately disappointed. The wine is highly engineered, as if the vinters dumped a couple of viles of vanilla extract into the bottle. If you like yellow tail, you'll like this a lot. Otherwise, a waste of crop land if you ask me.
Mt Beautiful Sauvignon Blanc 2009, Cheviot Hills, North Canterbury, South Island
Canterbury, New Zealand$21.95
Lovely mouth filling fruit and stone flavours. Bigger SB than is typical but very enjoyable.
Sabor Real Toro 2008, Do Toro
Castilla y León, Spain$15.95
Heavy, medicinal and somewhat oily. It's got flavour to be sure - deep black current , cherry, and wood but it feels almost saccharin. Tannic sour cherry finish. Good length and the high alcohol is relatively well integrated. If you like heavy spicy wines like 7 deadly zins, you will enjoy this.
Trivento Amado Sur Malbec/Bonarda/Syrah 2009, Mendoza
Mendoza, Argentina$16.95
Great value here. Floral and black current on the nose. Lots of berry flavours, predominantly cherry and raspberry with a bit of licorice and smoke meat. Well balanced and long finish. It's missing a certain sophistication but it's quite tasty for sure.
J. Lohr Riverstone Chardonnay 2010, Arroyo Seco
California, Usa$19.95
There are certainly much finer examples of Chardonnay for the price, but this is still a very drinkable wine. It's in a sweet and creamy style with obvious emphasis of oak. Overall though, the wine is reasonably well structured, tasty, and a nice crowdpleasing sipper.
Cennatoio Chianti Classico 2009, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$15.95
Nice colour and beautiful nose of cassis and dried herbs. Palate is simpler and without a lot of concentration, but its bright and balanced and a great pair for basic Italian fare.
Leone De Castris Riserva Salice Salentino 2007, Doc
Puglia, Italy$18.95
Nice weight and balance. Well crafted for food.
Maycas Del Limarí Especial Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2007, Limarí Valley
Limari Valley, Chile$19.95
This is a deep and dark Cabernet. Black current, earthy and slight vanilla nose. A brooding smokey, earthy palate held together by a core of black fruit all in a nice balance. There is still a bit of tannin here and I'm betting this will taste quite special in a few years. Very nice.
Sterling Vintner's Collection Merlot 2009, Central Coast, California
California, Usa$16.00
Quite a nice nose of dark fruit, chocolate and floral notes. The palate is smooth, fruit forward with some spice and a hint of sweetness but it lacks depth and power and so the flavours ultimately seem dilute. Not bad for the price, but there are better bargains out there.
