Hob Nob Chardonnay 2009, Vins De Pays D'oc
Languedoc, France$11.95
For fans of new world, heavily oaked chard. This has quite a nice nose of pear, lemon and burnt popcorn. The palate is very silky with the suggestion of creamy sweetness but overall nicely balanced by acids. The palate has a fairly intense candied lemon/pear fruit core but also a ton of herbs & spice - mainly clove. It's a bit too much herbal cough drop for me, but generally well made.
Sister's Run Shiraz 2009, Calvary Hill, Barossa Valley, South Australia
South Australia, Australia$15.95
Opaque dark cherry color with slightly dull purplish hue. Full of cassis and dark cherry fruit aromas - some spiced blueberry as well. It's full bodied with a lots of fruit and spice on the palate. Lacks poise and sophistication - big and clumsy. You could spread this on toast.
Delas Frères Saint Esprit Côtes Du Rhône Rosé 2011, Ac
Rhône, France$14.95
Ripe tree fruit on the nose with a dry, simple and crisp palate of tart strawberry and cranberry.
Las Moras Black Label Bonarda 2010, San Juan
San Juan, Argentina$15.95
inky dense in colour and flavour. Intense dark and slightly sweet fruit and some spice on decently structured base. acidity is nice, tannins gritty and there is some heat and bitterness on the finish. very drinkable and would probably do nice against a grilled steak.
Newman's Own Cabernet Sauvignon 2007, California
California, Usa$17.95
I met Paul Newman at a small environmental gathering in NYC not too long before he died. He was indeed an impressive man an I admired what he was doing with his foundation. So when I saw this on the shelf I thought I should at least give it a try - to honour his good heart. To my surprise, the wine is a well made, approachable red. It's soft in the mouth with easy but not overly sweet red fruit and berry and a mellow touch of spice on the finish. Not too much complexity but a joy to quaff. Cheers to Paul!
Ironstone Obsession Symphony 2009
California, Usa$9.95
Hard to score this wine since as JS notes, it's not a "serious" wine, but it sure is delicious. Very aromatic, muscat themed wine with nice acidity to offset the sweet tropical and melon flavours. Don't think, just drink and enjoy.
Napa Cellars Zinfandel 2008, Napa Valley
California, Usa$24.95
Drinking this in 2013 and the fruit has toned down a bit to give way to a more balanced while still relatively intense profile of dark fruit, mocha and smokey spice. The finish is quite dense and persistent but tinged with a bit of heat from the almost 15% alcohol. Very drinkable though not necessarily a tremendous value.
Santa Julia Magna 2011, Mendoza
Mendoza, Argentina$14.95
Nice value blend. Good core of fruit with some charred notes and a bit of pepper. Not a ton of complexity and the structure is soft, but easy drinking.
Rutherford Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, Napa Valley
California, Usa$39.95
Largely agree with DL's assessment. This lacks a fair bit of refinements and - certainly - for the price you can do much better, even for a Napa cab. Still very drinkable.
Gérard Bertrand Grand Terroir Montpeyroux 2007, Ac Côteaux Du Languedoc
Languedoc, France$18.95
Blackcurrent, pepper and wood on the nose. Concentrated fruit with an impression of a smooth sweetness despite solid acidic edge. Peppery burst at the end of and fairly lengthy finish. I like. The acid makes it nice food wine but I find it interesting enough on its own as well.
