Jacob's Creek Reserve Barossa Shiraz 2008, Barossa Valley, South Australia
Australia$16.95
Quite a powerful nose of dark fruit mint and eucalyptus and even a bit of pastrami. The palate is dense but balanced with cherry and mint flavours predominating. The alcohol is well integrated and the length average to medium. There is a certain lack of subtlety/layered-ness that keeps it below 90 for me but I still enjoyed this quite a bit and would agree that this wine punches above its price. Great value in the dark, dense new world shiraz category.
Château Des Charmes Old Vines Riesling 2010, VQA Niagara On The Lake
Ontario, Canada$13.75
Orchard fruit with a supporting seem of citrus. Fantastic balance with a mouthwatering backbone of acid supporting the off-dry sweetness. Long finish. Really enjoyable wine.
Decero Remolinos Vineyard Malbec 2008, Agrelo, Mendoza
Mendoza, Argentina$22.95
Blackberry, blueberry with hints of vanilla and cedar on the nose. The palate is smooth with an air of sophistication - nicely integrated fruit and spice with a earthy herbal note that hits with a burst on the finish. The flavours, while very pleasing, seem too short. Overall a nice wine, just shy of a great wine.
Duckhorn Decoy Cabernet Sauvignon 2009, Napa Valley
California, Usa$35.95
Plush and silky with great fruit and a bit of peppery spice. As other have noted, the structure and complexity is lacking for this price point but it's a highly enjoyable sipper.
Tedeschi Amarone Della Valpolicella 2007, Doc
Veneto, Italy$42.95
Not a hard edge to be found in this gorgeous wine. Aromas of tobacco, chocolate, sweet dried fruit and baking spices also play on the palate in complex layered silkiness. it's a joy to drink.
Tawse Sketches Of Niagara Chardonnay 2009, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$19.95
The balance and complexity are great at this price. The oak is obvious but not overwhelming and indeed nicely integrated with the minerality and fruit. Was a fantastic accompaniment to my first summer BBQ of the season.
Baron De Ley Varietales Graciano 2010, Doca Rioja
Rioja, Spain$21.95
Big flavours across the Rioja spectrum here. All on a beautiful frame. Lovely.
Domaine Faiveley Mercurey 2012, Ac
Burgundy, France$24.95
Gosh I love this wine. Very light but packed with freshness, elegance and poise. Fresh forest berries with a lovely seam of woodsy spice. It's the structure that really makes this such a pleasure to drink. Lively acidity, fine tannins, and a long spiced fruit finished. Yum.
Chehalem 3 Vineyard Pinot Noir 2008, Willamette Valley
Oregon, Usa$23.75
Disappointing. While there was some pleasant spice and structure to this wine, overall I found it extremely thin and uninteresting.
Luigi Bosca Single Vineyard Malbec 2008, Luján De Cuyo, Mendoza
Mendoza, Argentina$21.95
A very nicely structured wine with moderate complexity. The nose is pleasant but not overly revealing. The palate is warm and earthy with a nice core of fruit and a lengthy though somewhat alcohol infused finish. I tasted something resembling pitch, which threw me off at first but this softened to herbal / woody notes with time in the glass. I enjoyed the 2006 vintage immensely after a year or two in the cellar and I expect that this 2008 will impress even more after a little more bottle time.
