Jacob's Creek Reserve Barossa Shiraz 2008, Barossa Valley, South Australia Bottle
Jacob's Creek Reserve Barossa Shiraz 2008, Barossa Valley, South Australia
Australia
$16.95

Quite a powerful nose of dark fruit mint and eucalyptus and even a bit of pastrami. The palate is dense but balanced with cherry and mint flavours predominating. The alcohol is well integrated and the length average to medium. There is a certain lack of subtlety/layered-ness that keeps it below 90 for me but I still enjoyed this quite a bit and would agree that this wine punches above its price. Great value in the dark, dense new world shiraz category.

Generous dark fruit, peppery spice and earthy herbs. Quite powerful but the elegance is maintained with flavours being drawn out on a balanced palate with a fairly long finish. A bit of mineral bite with some heat at the end being the only thing that betrays the 14.5% alcohol.

A beautifully polished wine - complex nose, deeply textured and harmoniously balanced palate of black fruit, woodsy and herbal components and a seemingly endless finish. It's pricey, but delivers.

Flashes of violet is the first thing you notice when pouring this wine. Aromas of plum, black cherry and blackberry greet you next, along with some woodsy herbaceous-ness. The palate has plenty of fruit, but also some violet, black pepper and cinnamon. It's medium to full bodied with a healthy dose if juicy acidity, but feels soft and silky in the mouth. Medium finish. An impressive wine at this price.

Fernández De Piérola Reserva 2004 Bottle
Fernández De Piérola Reserva 2004
Rioja, Spain
$25.95

Nice oak derived aroma and flavours - deliciously woodsy and earthy with leather and tobacco and spice. The fruit is definitely mature - deep dried cherry and I think an indication that this wine probably doesn't have a lot of aging left. The balance is quite good and the finish medium long. Nice dusty wine.

Edgy indeed - fresh citrus and pea shoot / grass aromas. Very tart grapefruit and lemongrass citrus on the palate with some subtle wet stone for complexity. Despite the hard edged acidity, the wine is well balanced with excellent length. Racier than your typical SB but in a mouth wateringly delicious way.

Mas D'auzières Sympathie Pour Les Stones 2009, Ac Côteaux Du Languedoc Bottle
Mas D'auzières Sympathie Pour Les Stones 2009, Ac Côteaux Du Languedoc
Languedoc, France
$19.95

Powerful nose of dark fruit - plum, blackberry and some blueberry - accented by kirsch and a touch of floral and spice aromas. The initial mouthfeel is gorgeous - a silky, mouth-coating explosion of blackberry, cherry and subtle earthy spice. By mid palate, a drying bitterness sets in and stays. The finish is long but largely dominated by a bitterness that I personally didn't love. This wine benefitted from a bit of air plus slight chill to cellar temp. A little roast beast on the side might have been nice too!

Cassis, olive and wood smoke / pitch aromas are echoed in this dense, peppery, medium-full bodied wine. The acidity is there for balance and lending a nice structure and length. A great value to be sure, to s of complexity and interest for the money.

A beautiful, concentrated, crowd pleasing wine and a great value. Beautiful vibrant dark cherry colour. Core aromas of blackberry but almost venturing into amarone territory with dried fruit, cedar, black olive and spice. Tastes much the same as the aromas adding some dark cherry and chocolate. It's super concentrated, with a nice balance of sweetness, mild acidity and tannins. Feels very soft and lush the mouth and has a fairly persistent finish. Very enjoyable.
