Quails' Gate Merlot 2009, VQA Okanagan Valley Bottle
Quails' Gate Merlot 2009, VQA Okanagan Valley
British Columbia, Canada
$26.95

Amazing poise in this wine. Gorgeous layered nose of raspberry and blackberry and earthy spice with a touch of vanilla. The palate is silky but with concentrated berry, herb, and spice. It's very nicely balanced with a warm, lengthy finish of fruit and spice. The tannins are a bit green but it's drinking very well. I enjoyed with venison and pork tourtière and it was synergistic match. Great to see reasonably priced Canadian wines achieving this level of sophistication.

Inky purple color. Deep stewed fruit aromas framed with mocha and a bit of spice. Palate is silky smooth black cherry and chocolate. Warm, full bodied, well layered, balanced and with great lingering finish. Quite rich and delicious.

La Pieve Barolo 2008, Docg Bottle
La Pieve Barolo 2008, Docg

Such great contrasts in this wine. Big fruit and smoked herbs and spice balanced by sharp acids and tannic grit. A real pleasure to drink and just about perfect as a match to the umami euphoria of a medium rare ribeye.

A beautiful but overpriced cab. aromatics and palate revolving around a deep core of dark fruit supported by toasty mocha, herbs, and sweet earthiness. structure is great through perhaps not elegant. long finish. excellent accompaniment to steak but not worth $61 in my view.

Big fruit and a touch sweet but nice herb driven complexity and balance. A crowd pleaser with enough poise and structure to satisfy a more critical palate.

Bright and vibrant but with an elegance and complexity that lingers. Lots of herbal and gentle spice notes here overlaying a bed of great fruit. The vibrant balance of this wine is what impresses the most. Very enjoyable.

Norman Hardie Unfiltered Niagara Pinot Noir 2010, VQA Niagara Peninsula

Just beautiful. Loads of fruit while avoiding the sweetness that's typical of new world pinots. Lot of interest in the earthy, smokey and spicy genre ... all layer on a lengthy, poised palate. Worth the indulgence.

Auntsfield Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2011, Southern Valleys Bottle
Auntsfield Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2011, Southern Valleys
Marlborough, New Zealand
$32.95

New world fruit but with old world restraint and structure. Sour cherry, underripe plum with lots of toasted herbs dominate the palate. It's plush but with a beautiful backbone of acidity and fine grained tannins that give it a great mouthfeel and structure and long finish. Very nice.
