Delaforce Touriga Nacional/Cabernet Sauvignon 2007
Douro, Portugal$24.95
Big fruit appeal in this wine while still preserving old world structure and supporting flavours. The nose and palate both hold an almost Amarone like depth of dark and stewed fruits on a backbone of earth and savoury herb notes. The acidity is very well matched to the fruit and the tannins are quite supple leading to a smooth and medium-long finish. A really tasty big wine.
Domaine Lafond Roc Epine Lirac 2011, Ac
Rhône, France$18.95
This hits all the notes that southern Rhone should. Big fruit but nicely balanced with herb and spice notes along with a poised if not overwhelmingly complex structure. Nicely balanced with a long fruit retaining finish. Easy and pleasurable quaffer, but with enough going on to make you pause that extra few seconds and take it all in.
Bouchard Pere & Fils Pinot Noir Bourgogne 2012
Burgundy, France$19.85
Hits the mark when looking for a well priced bourgogne. It's not as subtle or complex as some I have tried in higher price categories, but the tart cranberry / cherry, mild spice, clean acicity and fine tannins definitely satisfy. I touch more sweetness than I would like, but a great buy.
Mountain Fish Agiorgitiko 2012, Igp Peloponnese
Peloponnese, Greece$13.70
Easy drinking and certainly not unpleasant, but unremarkable in my view, even for this price. I found it quite flat in comparison to the "zesty" and "lively" descriptions shared by others.
Tokaj Kereskedoház Grand Selection Semi Dry Tokaji Furmint 2012, Pdo Tokaj Hegyalja
Hungary$14.25
After a few years in the cellar, this is a real beauty. Rounded edges but not soft, full of hints of tropical fruit & herbs with an edgy, medium to long finish.
Batasiolo Sabri Barbera D'asti 2012, Docg
Piedmont, Italy$15.95
Great value, easy drinking red with some nice acidity and structure. Fruit forward without being jammy. Tartness adds complexity and food friendliness.
Barão De Vilar Feuerheerd's Tinto 2014, Doc Douro
Douro, Portugal$11.75
Fresh, racy and savoury. Hard to beat at sub $15, though without the complexity that a few more bucks can bring in other value based examples.
Viña Cobos Felino Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, Mendoza
Argentina$19.95
Generic new world cab. Dark fruit/black cherry flavors dominate. Slightly sweet and a little hot but not as much as you'd expect at almost 15% alcohol. Slight oak and spice comes through but there aren't too many layers to navigate here. Id say its a pleasant quaffer.
Gaba Do Xil Mencía 2008, Do Valdeorras
Spain$15.95
Dark cheery color. Very floral aromas with sour cherry and a bit of pepper. The palate is soft cherry with lots of peppery spice, lively acidity and mildly drying tannins. Very pleasant.
Navajas Reserva 2005, Doca Rioja
Spain$16.95
I quite enjoyed this wine, especially considering its modest price. The nose didn't give me much - lots of smokey oak and alcohol but the palate was layered with toasted oak, a deep core of black cherry and a nice peppery finish that lingered. Tasted November 2011.
