Bodegas Pablo Menguante Vidadillo 2007, Do Cariñena
Aragón, Spain$13.25
Like a glass full of peppercorns. Good core of fruit, nice balance and long finish. Unique and quite enjoyable.
Bonterra Zinfandel 2010, Mendocino/Amador/Lake Counties
California, Usa$19.95
Straightforward, fruit driven zin. Simple aromatics and palate of sweet red/black berry with light highlights of slightly smokey baking spices. There is not much to be said about the structure ... it's very smooth, no real edges, but not a lot of depth either. Very easy to drink and a crowd pleaser. I quite enjoyed it as an alternative to the jammy fruit bomb zins that are typical at this price. Nice to have a few on hand for a casual party.
Coto De Hayas Centenaria Garnacha 2011, Do Campo De Borja
Spain$12.75
Powerful fruit, vanilla and toasted coffee/chocolate aromas with added hints of mint on the palate. Quite jammy and sweet, but nicely balanced with an interesting structure. Like JS, I found it a bit too rich but I agree that this will have wide appeal. It's a nicely made fruit bomb!
M. Gassier Nostre Pais Costières De Nîmes 2010
Rhône, France$22.95
There is some impressive character to this wine - fine aromas of black cherry and cassis with nicely layered spice, tobacco and herbaceous notes. The palate is generally smooth, dry and balanced with cherry and spice dominating. However, it's quite hot and the tannins seem somewhat unresolved. I have a bottle tucked away for sampling in a couple of years.
Sandbanks Winery Baco Reserve 2010, Ontario
Canada$19.95
A surprisingly (for me) poised baco here from Sandbanks. Nice nose of blackcurrent, mocha and a hint of earthy spice. Very nice mouth feel and great balance on a palate of ripe blackberry followed by sour cherry and plum finish. Despite the sour core, the is a subtle sweetness that runs through and some smokey complexity from the oak aging. Makes for an enjoyable and easy drinking red. Nice to see this quality from Sandbanks.
Clos Troteligotte K Or Malbec 2009, Ac Cahors
Southwest, France$16.95
Virtually opaque but bright crimson colour. Aromas of plum, blackberry fruit along with floral secondary notes (violet) underpinned by woody herbal notes. The palate is dry, smooth with a nice core of fruit, silky tannins (after some breathing) and a bit of heat. Nice medium long finish - a great food wine.
Clos Des Batuts Cahors 2009, Ac
Southwest, France$14.95
Very approachable aromas of blackberry, ripe plum and a hint if anise. The palate veers to dark cherry. Medium-full bodied, medium acidity and some mildly-grippy tannins. Nice concentration and length.
Rotllán Torra 2009, Doca Priorat
Priorat, Spain$19.95
This is a very enjoyable, easy drinking wine. The nose exhibits dried fruit, prune, and hint of spice. The palate is very smooth with modern fruit and vanilla infused oak notes as well as a slightly peppery undertone. While not remarkably complex, it has great balance, a smooth silky mouthfeel and is unpretentiously delicious.
Las Rocas Garnacha 2011, Do Calatayud
Aragón, Spain$18.35
I find this vintage somewhat flatter and less balanced that 2010, but it's still a pleasant, easy drinking garnacha. There is a good core of fruit and a hint of spice, though not much depth. It could use a bit more acid, in my view, and there is a bit of bitter heat on the finish.
Pier Rio Sordo Barbaresco 2009, Docg
Piedmont, Italy$23.25
Loved this. Pours light and clear. Very lively and grippy with dusty red fruit, and floral notes zooming along electric acidity. Wild and unpretentious.
