Sterling Vintner's Collection Merlot 2009, Central Coast, California
California, Usa$16.00
Quite a nice nose of dark fruit, chocolate and floral notes. The palate is smooth, fruit forward with some spice and a hint of sweetness but it lacks depth and power and so the flavours ultimately seem dilute. Not bad for the price, but there are better bargains out there.
François Schwach Muscat 2008, Ac Alsace
Alsace, France$13.65
I love Muscat in all its variations and this is a very nice Alsation example. Typical muscat aromas with candied limes and floral tones which follow on the palate. The sweetness is relatively subtle and there is some acid to bring it into balance. Orange citrus flavours play on the medium finish.
Château Saint Roch Chimères 2009, Ac Côtes Du Roussillon Villages
Languedoc, France$19.95
I'm with Szabo on this one. This is a rather basic new world style wine. I also find it mentholated with a medical cherry (cough syrup) core on the palate. It is smooth with little grip. The herbal notes add some character in the mid palate but otherwise there is nothing to get excited about here.
Cono Sur Bicicleta Viognier 2011, Colchagua Valley
Colchagua Valley, Chile$9.95
A steal at this price (or maybe I'm just paying too much for the other wines I enjoy?). Loads of character - beautiful orchard fruit nose with a touch of sweet floral notes. The palate, while still loaded with honey, leans a bit more to citrus adding a nice bite of acidity. This is a gorgeous summer sipper with complexity well above the mean at this price and, I'm guessing, very broad appeal. Can't go wrong.
La Posta Estela Armando Vineyard Bonarda 2009, Mendoza
Argentina$14.95
Lots of dark fruit on the nose and palate. Some of the aromas are tainted by a fairly strong alcohol smell but the alcohol is relatively integrated on the palate. Decently long and balanced. A fairly quaffable wine for the price.
Poderi Angelini Primitivo Di Manduria 2008
Puglia, Italy$18.95
Concentrated layered nose of dried fruit, herbs and a touch of smokey spice. Some nice subtle complexity going on here and the fruit concentration on the palate is beautiful and sustained on a great balanced structure. Long smooth finish. Really enjoyed this wine.
Natura Rosé 2011, Rapel Valley
Rapel Valley, Chile$13.95
Crisp and refreshing, this rose is very summer food friendly. Nice citrus and sour cherry aromas and flavours and a subtle but distinctive sweetness that steps foward when paired with slightly acidic foods. I quite enjoyed this wine.
Malivoire Ladybug Rosé 2011, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$15.95
A lot of complexity for the money in this rose. Beautifully layered aromas of berry and tree fruit with a hint of grapefruity citrus. The palate delivers in kind with some added minerality. Balance is spot on with a solid core acidity and just a tease of sweetness to rein it in. Can't go wrong sipping this wine in the dying light of a summer's evening.
Mcmanis Family Vineyards Viognier 2011, California
California, Usa$18.95
Tropical fruit aromas and palate. Weighty mid-palate with glycerine sweetness but very crisp (almost tart) finish. Good balance overall and there is enough depth to make this wine interesting in addition to just plain tasty.
Stoneleigh Sauvignon Blanc 2012, Marlborough
Marlborough, New Zealand$17.45
No sulphur issues in my tasting. beautiful nose of candied citrus & some orchard fruit along with a nice stoney grassy note. Palate packs a wallop of mouth watering acidity holding up citrus and gorgeous minerality. Long lemon/lime finish. Perfect summer sipper.
