Rustenberg R.M. Nicholson 2010, Wo Stellenbosch Bottle
Rustenberg R.M. Nicholson 2010, Wo Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch, South Africa
$19.95

Dark ruby in colour with a medium+ intense nose.

A lot going on for a wine under $20

Positives: This complex wine features cedar, blackcurrants, plums, dark cherry, hickory, cocoa, eucalyptus, pepper, cassis, arugula, radicchio and licorice. Full body with medium+ tannins, good acidity & a long length.

Negatives: A touch hot on the finish from the 14.5% alcohol

Interesting Note: Rustenberg was founded in 1682, but South Africa is still labeled as New World. Decant for 30 min to an hour.

Drink now or in the next 7 years on its own or pair it with an aged T-bone steak.

Amayna Chardonnay Estate Btld. 2008, Leyda Valley, San Antonio Bottle
Amayna Chardonnay Estate Btld. 2008, Leyda Valley, San Antonio
Aconcagua Valley, Chile
$19.90

Bright gold in colour with a medium+ intense nose.

Positives: A really nice, smooth and creamy Chard featuring medium toasted oak, buttery, spiced apple, mango, pineapple, lemon zest, persimmon, creme brulée, lemon meringue pie, coconut, vanilla and cashews. Full body with good acidity and a long length.

Negatives: You do get some heat from the 14.5% alcohol.

Interesting Point: LCBO has this at $3 off regular price until it's sold off. Good time to buy now.

Drink now or over the next 2-3 years on its own or pair it with, what else?; Lobster and drawn butter. Utterly hedonistic.

Closson Chase S. Kocsis Vineyard Chardonnay 2009, VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Peninsula Bottle
Closson Chase S. Kocsis Vineyard Chardonnay 2009, VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada
$34.95

A premium Ontario Chard that can compete with the best in California, but not have their price tag

Description: Bright gold in colour with a medium+ intense nose. This intense, edgy and complex wine features medium toasted oak, butter, lemon custard, crème brûlée, peach, granny apple, toffee, apricot, dill, creamed corn, tea leaf and pink grapefruit. Full body with good acidity and a long length

Negatives: None

Interesting Points: Closson Chase is one of my favourite Ontario wineries that produce full body Chards. This wine worked well in both Montrachet style glassware as well as in the cooler climate one.

Drink now or in the next 3 years on its own or pair it with Fettuccine Alfredo with blackened chicken.

One of my favourite Canadian Chards, and probably the best for under $22

Buitenverwachting Chardonnay 2010, Wo Constantia
Coastal Region, South Africa
$19.95

Light gold with a medium+ intensity on the nose.

Positives: What a nice Chard that has just enough toasted oak as not to over shadow the fruit in this wine. Notes of lemon, crisp apple, caramel, light butter, lemon candy, limestone & tangerine. Medium to medium+ body with good acidity & long length.

Negatives: Some overly tart notes on the finish.

Drink now or over the next 3 years on its own or pair it with rotisserie hen.

Light yellow with medium+ intensity. The nose has a nice bouquet of wild flowers, peach, orange rind & smoked toasted Pine nuts. The taste is dry, good acidity, medium+ length, medium body & balanced. Definitely Viognier on the taste with peach, orange rind, smoked apple, nectarine, some vanilla & toasted Pine nuts. This wine has an addictive quality that you just want to go back & keep drinking. Lucky the alcohol is not above 14%. Drink now on it's own or pair it with roasted sweet orange pepper & grilled French cut pork chops. Delicious.

Château De Cruzeau Blanc 2007, Ac Pessac Léognan Bottle
Château De Cruzeau Blanc 2007, Ac Pessac Léognan
Bordeaux, France
$25.25

1st off just want to let you know that this is so far my favourite Sauvignon Blanc. Gold in colour with medium+ intensity. The nose has beautiful aromas that has a prominent note of guava followed by gooseberry, hay, lantanas, chalk, green apple & passion fruit. The taste is dry, medium+ acid, medium body with long length & balanced. This wine has been on it lies for 10 months prior to bottling that is evident by the creaminess of this wine. Guava dominates the taste. Other notes are as the nose with addition to edamame, pear, pink grapefruit, dry apricot & golden apples. This an exceptional Sauvignon Blanc for its price considering the complexity. The wine isn't bone dry like a lot if Sauvignons. Drink now on it's own or pair it with Sea Bass with white wine sauce on a bed of couscous.
