In the pages below, you will find a summary of my tasting notes to supplement much of the written material that I provide. Should I taste a wine and subsequently review that label, I do so because it offers something unique or of interest such as noted varietal or regional character.

Giordano Collection Primitivo Di Manduria 2008, Doc
Puglia, Italy$19.95
The name is a bit of a mouthful, so why not just call it Zinfandel (Primitivo and Zin are the same grape). A ‘jammy new-world style wine’; full-bodied with lots of stewed dark fruit and just the right amount of acidity to cut the richness. A touch of sweetness goes well with the hit of spice on the finish. A well balanced wine. (Northof9finewine, April 2011)
Caves Naveran Dama Cava 2007, Spain
Spain$13.25
A vintage cava with aromas of tea biscut and grapefruit; initially smooth to taste followed quickly by a celebration of bubbles on the palate and a lovely dry finish.
Gunderloch Fritz's Riesling 2009, Qba Rheinhessen
Rheingau, Germany$13.95
I really like this! A lovely floral/citrus nose and just the right amount of sweetness to taste. Reminds me of Moscato d'Asti without the fizz. Simple and fun; an ideal sumer wine. Enjoy! (northof9finewine.com, May 2011)
Joseph Cattin Pinot Noir 2009, Ac Alsace
Alsace, France$14.95
An amazing nose of cinnamon spice, cherry, and fungus. This wine is soft, simple, and by no means extracted or aggressive; a nice example and a good match for a variety of foods. Try it with ham or stuffed mushrooms. (Northof9finewine.com, May 2011)
Carla Chiaro Reserve Malbec 2007, Mendoza
Argentina$14.95
A combination of black cherry and plum with a touch of spice that pulls it together nicely. Light to medium body with a juicy sweet core and clean acidity that will pair very well with a variety of food choices.
Farnese Daunia Sangiovese 2010, Abruzzo
Abruzzo, Italy$8.45
Someone once told me that when the fancy $$$ bottles are empty at ritzy Rosedale functions, they refill them with Farnese and no one can tell the difference... fact or fiction, you decide but my opinion of this wine remains unchanged: this is a very good bottle of wine for the money and simply put, it’s an unbeatable deal. Expect a smooth, medium bodied feel with lots of fruit.
Concha Y Toro Casillero Del Diablo Sauvignon Blanc 2011, Central Valley
Chile$11.95
Mouth puckering Sauvignon, if not slightly aggressive (for my taste). Pronounced citrus and tropical notes plus the classic lemon grass/herbal character which is somewhat overshadowed by the lip-smacking acidity. Everyone else in the room seemed to enjoy it, so…
Tasted April 2012.
Aya Charming 2010, Alentejano
Portugal$9.85
A blend of Casteloa, Trincadeira, Aragones and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Bright ruby in the glass with red fruit and baking spices on the nose. The taste is ‘juicy’ in a word, ‘refreshing’ for another; fresh cranberries and currants; slightly tart, which I like. Surprisingly light in both colour and body but full of lip-smackingly good taste. Sip this one solo or pair with a tomato based dish on the weekend. Enjoy slightly chilled for maximum pleasure. Tasted March 2012.
Seaglass Riesling 2011, Monterey County
California, Usa$11.45
This is the only California Riesling available in the LCBO General List. Floral soap aromas with subtle citrus notes cling to an uplifting light body and flavours of key lime pie. Easy drinking, off-dry, and very non-assuming - enjoy it for what it is. Tasted Mar 2012.
Peachy Canyon Westside Zinfandel 2008, Paso Robles
California, Usa$24.95
$25 - Are you serious?! If it was priced correctly at say, $12, I wouldn't even comment, but... Nope, I'm not even gonna go there. You can decide for yourself.
Tasted June 2012.
