Château Philippe Le Hardi Mercurey Les Puillets 1er Cru 2009, Ac
Burgundy, France$29.95
My impression is one of flowers, with some sour cherry. Very smooth and pleasant, and it gets better with each glass. I was in Mercurey just a few weeks ago, and they tend to serve it young, so I see no need to wait. Enjoy it now
Porcupine Ridge Syrah 2011, Wo Swartland
South Africa$13.95
About what I would expect for this price. Not all that smooth, and not much complexity either.
Lealtanza Reserva Selección 2007, Doca Rioja
Rioja, Spain$19.95
Very rich and complex taste. Initially I found it slightly bitter, but it really grew on me by my second glass. Drink this when you can have a lot of it.
Aneto Red 2009
Douro, Portugal$14.75
Not nearly smooth enough to deserve a ninety rating, or be worth twenty dollars.
Kellerei St. Magdalena Pinot Grigio 2011, Doc Südtirol Alto Adige
Alto Adige-Trentino, Italy$16.95
What a nice surprise. This is very light and smooth, and very pleasant. An excellent value.
Angulo Innocenti Malbec 2010, La Consulta, Mendoza
Mendoza, Argentina$18.95
David describes it well. Nice deep taste, but I did not think it was smooth enough to rate a ninety. Decent value, though.
Cousiño Macul Antiguas Reservas Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
Maipo Valley, Chile$16.45
Very rich taste, though I would describe it as being on the slightly dry and sour side. The first time I thought it had a bit of harshness, then I followed Steve's instructions and decanted it for an hour. That worked. This is a very good wine and a great value.
Domaine Des Aubuisières Cuvée De Silex Vouvray 2011, Ac
Loire, France$14.75
I do not particularly like the bouquet, so I choose to drink it from a tall, thin champaign flute. But I really like the honey and fruit taste described by the other reviewers. It also improves as I keep drinking it. Very nice.
Lornano Chianti Classico 2009
Tuscany, Italy$17.95
This wine has a very clean cherry taste that grows over time. It reminds me of Napa Valley rather than Chianti, so I suppose it does not express its sense of place very well. But I value taste over terroir, and this is wonderful, so I give it a strong 90. Amazing value for the price.
Bodegas Altanza Lealtanza Crianza 2009
Rioja, Spain$17.95
This is a pleasant and reasonably smooth wine for the price, but perhaps there is a bit too much wood or cedar or pencil for my taste. It does not reach ninety territory in my opinion.
