Many South African wines, like this one, have a fine mineral layer which makes ripe full bodied wines lighter and...

(Had the 2009)
Asked for a recommendation for a stand-in wine we had in NY from the Canary Islands- had the smoke flavour from the soil-
I told them my flavour profile:
Medium to full bodied
Dry to V. dry
Peppery and/or spicy
I do well with descriptors that include "black" or "dark" i.e. "black fruit", "dark cherry", chocolate etc.

They suggested this wine for us.
Spot on.
delicious and amazing value!

Outstanding wine for the price. Berries, fruit and sweet spices dominate the intense aroma. Well balanced and a pleasure on its own or with food.

I've always enjoyed the leathery and smokey character of Cathedral Cellar cabs. The 2008 is a step up in terms of sophistication, adding a sharp acidic backbone that provides an elegant frame for deep berry and tobacco notes. The high acid makes it a nice paring for rich foods like steak, as others have noted. An amazing value.

This is a very nice cab sauv for $15 - full bodied, black current, leather, earthy taste. Good steak wine, bought 3 more. 89-90.

I was looking for a hearty wine to go with’ steak’ (that’s all my wife said of the main course) and chose this one based on Steve’s rating and the price – a great value, not disappointing at all. Red berry’s and earthy notes on the nose. It has great structure and volume in that you could truly feel the wine on your cheeks. Tannins we strong but not overpowering but I’d suggest decanting 30 mins to let the wine fully open up. At $14.95 I find it a tremendous value; it’ll be showing up at a few of our BBQ’s for sure.

Steve's review on this is rather acurate. I do feel that it has potential to age rather well over the next 5 years. It wasn't nearly as fruity and slightly more tannic as I would have expected, but in a good way.

The 2008 K W V Cathedral Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon is medium bodied, nicely aromatic wine with integrated notes of cherry, blackberry, roasted chocolate and cedar/oak. It has a nice structure, with refined tannins (decant for 30 min), refreshing acidity and a long, mineral finish. Drink now till 2016 as KWV wines age well in short term. My impression: NICE, 89 pts and a recommended buy. I am a fan of KWV wines - especially the Merlots, so I decided jump on the reviewing wagon and add to the 10 already existing user reviews whom I just echo. LCBO's decision to add this wine to the essential collection and for $15 was the right one. Tasted Oct/11.

Not bad for the price. Deep red colour. Earthy and smoky tones. Nice tannins, excellent length. Tasted July 2011.

So many people look past the South African section of the wine shop for something more familiar, but this label is a good reason to make an unscheduled stop. A medium bodied Cab to pair with a hearty meal this weekend. The weight of the food will soften the tannins in the wine. Expect a mix of dark cherry and blackberry fruit with an earthy complexity and a touch of mint on the finish. Tasted Jan 2012.

Decant this wine an hour before serving.

First South African wine ever. So no expectations going in. What a surprise to find a wine with this much presence ( my wife's term) at this price. Went very nicely with the steak dinner. Will be buying a few more, some for now and some to put down.
Highly recommended.

Blackberries, cherries, cassis, smokiness, tabacco, and a hint of spice on the nose. Juicy, ripe fruit on a palate that is well-balanced and medium-to-full-bodied. May improve over the next 5 years.

Dark red, nice nose, nice finish, very pleasant. Try the 2009 at 8.85 sometime.
