Dominus Napanook 2013, Napa Valley
California, Usa$134.95
This is quite closed at the moment, but is elegant, with fine tannin, pure fruit (still jammy, but not artificial) and a long finish. Better balanced and 'real' than most other napa's, even at this price point (120 at the SAQ!) ... high quality ageworthy wine, will be very interesting when the secondary aromas begin to show
La Chablisienne Chablis Premier Cru Grande Cuvée 2015
Burgundy, France$31.95
This co op delivers value driven and high quality chablis. oak doesntt distract too much from the great mineral qualities.
Domaine Combier Crozes Hermitage 2016
Rhône, France$39.25
Pure northern rhone syrah, not too ripe. Lifted green and cracked pepper, black olive sour blackberry and popped corn (without the butter) dominate. Meaty component is there. Vibrant, no obvious oak, medium body
Taurino Riserva Salice Salentino 2009
Puglia, Italy$16.50
Classic Puglian Negroamaro. Slightly sweet and savory, but well integrated with dates and dry fig aromas. Leathery, viscous and full bodied and Typically Italian. Good stuff at a great value...still going strong
Parés Baltà Brut Cava
Penedès, Spain$23.92
Apple, tropical fruit (xarel-lo), nutty, slight minerola and yeasty component. Good stuff, light and easy
Taurino Cosimo A 64 2006
Puglia, Italy$27.45
Still kicking...showing archetypal Italian savory aromas and palate coating body....oak, dark and red fruit and secondary aromas (animal, leafy) ...excellent buy
This (july 2017) is showing even better than all previous tastings. Mouth coating and luscious, long finish and perfect balance.....so italian
Alain Lorieux Expression Chinon 2010
Loire, France$20.25
Good, classic chinon, but this works for me
Hatzidakis Santorini Assyrtiko 2014
Greece$27.25
Outsdanding complex Assyrtiko. Weighty and very heavy dose of minerality of the sort That I Have some trouble putting into words. I love these wines
Torres Fransola 2014
Catalonia, Spain$27.65
Good SB, but lacks the sharp acidity and bright fruit that I am looking for. There are many other options of this varietal that deliver more at a discount
Tetramythos Kalavryta 2014
Peloponnese, Greece$17.30
This has been a repeat purchase on my end, which is rare. Savoury, leathery, cherry and berry flavours integrate beautifully in this wine. Purity and balance, and a price point that gets me overly excited. Makes me think of a trousseau /gamay/pinot/sangiovese blend...if that makes any sense. kind of reminiscent of Jura reds... Definitely worth a shot..interesting and delicious with good backbone. In my books this is one of the top contenders for top spot under 20 at the SAQ
