Tetramythos Kalavryta 2014
Peloponnese, Greece$17.30
This has been a repeat purchase on my end, which is rare. Savoury, leathery, cherry and berry flavours integrate beautifully in this wine. Purity and balance, and a price point that gets me overly excited. Makes me think of a trousseau /gamay/pinot/sangiovese blend...if that makes any sense. kind of reminiscent of Jura reds... Definitely worth a shot..interesting and delicious with good backbone. In my books this is one of the top contenders for top spot under 20 at the SAQ
Planeta Cerasuolo Di Vittoria 2014, Cerasuolo Di Vittoria
Sicily, Italy$24.00
From the only DOCG in Sicily. Fantastic aromas of sweet cranberry, spice, mineral, floral and cured meat (much like homemade capicollo)on the nose, reminiscent of that classic Italian 'cantina' smell (those of you who spent time in nonno/nonna's basement workshops will undoubtedly relate!). On the palate, it is juicy and vibrant and remains true to the olfactory characteristics. However it is showing some rather intense bitterness on the finish which is throwing off a style of wine that is typically right up my alley.
Bonny Doon A Proper Claret 2013
California, Usa$20.00
Great Bordeaux blend from Cali, peppery and vegetal (in a good way), with a host of red and dark fruit. One of the best values from California at the SAQ, clearly hot climate but not overdone. Highly recommended. Good stuff, atypical.
Pra Valpolicella Superiore 2013
Veneto, Italy$29.95
Luscious, viscous wine with flavors dried/confected dark fruit, prune and loads of herbs and spice/baking spices. Fruit is pure and flavors are typically Veneto, the oak performs well here. A fine ripasso, outperforms many readily available amarone's on my palate
Marco De Bartoli Vignaverde 2014
Sicily, Italy$26.90
Elegant and light wine that has a lot going on. Crisp and clean, salinity, white fruit and citrus rind come together in somewhat thought provoking fashion. Gets better as you drink it.
Domaine Lafage Cuvée Centenaire 2014, Ac Côtes Du Roussillon
Languedoc, France$16.75
Though wines dominated by perfume and floral extract are generally not my cup of tea, this shows fine balance, structure and hosts a lot of white fruit and melon notes that make it a win in my book.
Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir 2014, Dundee Hills
Oregon, Usa$51.95
Slightly sweet and jammy, fruityand complex. Doesnt do the best job holding its alcohol. Perhaps good for its category, but overpriced (like many pinot's) in my opinion
Alto Moncayo Garnacha 2013, Campo De Borja
Spain$48.75
If you're into mouthfulls of oak and overextracted fake fruit, Then this is the wine for you. Though she May be wearing way too much make up, there is a sugarfied 'deliciousness' to this wine (like the 2013 Caymus) That Many Would like. Not my style, style goal That Many will love, and The Therefore Could be a value for Those Who Prefer New World fruit bombs.
Tenuta Della Terre Nere Etna 2014
Sicily, Italy$25.10
Beautifully balanced etna, mineral/dry earth character carries the red fruit, herbs and dustiness through the entire ride. Long finish, rustic and pure.
