Isole E Olena Cepparello 2015
Tuscany, Italy$113.95
This is jumbled and off balance at the moment. The oak is dominant, adding a layer of artificiality. That said, nice structure and fruit profile. I would steer clear of this wine, if you are a fan of overdone sangiovese, then perhaps give it a few years.
Foradori Granato Teroldego 2013, I.G.T.
Alto Adige-Trentino, Italy$81.75
While quite tight and young aromatically, the texture of this wine is liquid velvet, with subtlety and elegance, perfectly structured with tannins amongst the finest ive tasted. Will benefit from time on its side
Guigal Hermitage 2011, Hermitage
Rhône, France$82.00
Elegant and well structured syrah. However the oak and concentration mesh the nuanced spicy/meaty character and mask the minerality. Last wine tasted in a lineup of far bigger new world wines might have thrown me off. Good, but certainly not great
Heitz Cellars Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
California, Usa$70.75
Excellent napa cab, ripe and complex but not overly lush, oaky or artificial. This tows the line between old world structure and new world fruit quite well. A high quality cabernet that will definitely benefit from a few years of rest
Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon 2013, Napa Valley
California, Usa$74.95
A well structured and polished caberent, pepper dark and red fruit and a hint of herbal character. It is however not all that approachable in its youth, and there is some heat from the alcohol on the finish
Le Clos Du Caillou Bouquet Des Garrigues 2014, Côtes Du Rhône
Rhône, France$26.80
This 85% grenache is beautifully balanced. Dominated by sweet strawberry aromas and flavors (very much like those grown in Quebec, small and ripe, not those giant sour mutant Costco types), it screams southern rhone grenahce. The pure fruit flavors are complimented by Mediterranean herbs, its mouth coating texture is enhanced by mineral notes and spice brought about (probably) by the syrah (10%) and perhaps the small amounts of mourvedre and carignan. High alcohol and full body yet light, nimble and juicy, with hardly any residual heat on the palate.
Norman Hardie County Chardonnay Unfiltered 2014, VQA Prince Edward County
Ontario, Canada$45.20
Highly balanced chardonnay from Niagara, beat out all 4 white burgundies at its price point when tasted blind. The oak is present but integrated, and the high acidity is beautifully balanced by its weight and fruit. 45.75 at the SAQ, so not inexpensive, but of high enough quality to be considered a value in the world of oak treated chardonnay.
Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
California, Usa$199.95
Slightly more balanced than the caymus ... but nonetheless overextracted and overdone.
La Fiorita Brunello Di Montalcino 2010
Tuscany, Italy$68.75
Among the best of all the brunello's at the Benvenuto Brunello tasting in 2017 in Montreal. Concentrated yet fresh, with caramelized orange zest, mint, dark and red fruit and good oak. Still youthful. ALTHOUGH the Riserva HAD more depth (heavy on the dried plum and fig), This Was (along with some of the products from la maggia) the stand out of the night.
Tasted again august...liked it but found it to be too young and slighlty austere, but packing lots of depth. (90 pts)
La Rioja Alta Viña Ardanza Reserva 2007, Doca Rioja
Rioja, Spain$54.95
Can not confused with anything this purpose high quality Rioja. Tabacco leaf, ripe / dried fruit (red and dark), spicy / woody, plum, leathery, great acidity and balance. Lots of oak, perfectly integrated purpose. These sccm to age very slowly, so can probably be Stored for Many Years, goal is drinking great now. Scales the classic with the modern, Reviews another example of why this area is the Easiest one to recommend.
