Château Des Charmes Old Vines Riesling 2007, VQA Niagara On The Lake
Ontario, Canada$16.95
Nice fruit aromas, above average acidity and a bit of residual sugar seems nicely balanced. Med+ body, bit of bitterness (not unpleasant) on a decent finish. Tasted twice, Dec 2010.
Château St Cosme Les Deux Albion Côtes Du Rhône 2008
Rhône, France$19.95
Medium ruby red. Above average intensity on the nose, with plum, blackcherry, smoke, pepper, and some some wood. This wine is dry with chewy/grippy tannins - comes across young - with medium acid and good weight. On the palate there is added leather and spice. With a med+ length this is pretty good. Feb 2011.
Domaine Notre Dame Des Pallières Gigondas 2007, Ac
Rhône, France$23.95
A medium intense nose with lots of dark fruit, blackcherry and a bit of earth. Dry, with quite a bit of tannin but fairly fine. Fairly high acid, med+ weight. Powerful, very nice (coming close to delicious), needs a few years to be at peak. Bought a few to lay down. Feb 2011.
Sauvion Muscadet Sèvre Et Main Sur Lie 2008, Loire Valley
Loire, France$12.95
Pale straw with green tinge, medium intensity nose with apple, minerality. Seems a bit simple. Dry, medium+ acid, citrus/apple/grapefruit on palette, short finish with a bit of bitterness. Feb 2011.
Sportoletti Assisi Rosso 2008, Doc
Umbria, Italy$14.05
Medium ruby/garnet. A bit closed on the nose. Ripe fruit, cherry, strawberry, vanilla. Dry, medium weight with a fair bit of rougher tannin. More cherry appears on the mid-palate along with some oak and earth. Above average acid balances. Pretty good length finish.
March 2011.
Cattier Premier Cru Brut Champagne 2002, Ac, Chigny Les Roses
Champagne, France$49.95
Straw-gold, med+ intensity with aromas of dates, apple juice, earth, yeast, hay. Dry, impression of medium alcohol, high acid with a medium mouthfeel and powerful flavours. Has some complexity. I found some bitterness on finish but quite long. Feb 2011.
Anne Boecklin Pinot Gris Réserve 2007, Ac Alsace
Alsace, France$17.95
Straw yellow-gold, interesting aromas of raisin, honey, pineapple, grapefruit. Off dry, fairly intense mid-palette, medium length finish. Interesting. Feb 2011.
Kilikanoon Killerman's Run Shiraz 2008, South Australia
Australia$19.95
Deep black-purple, intense nose of black fruit, overripe fruit. Plenty of tannin, wood, heavy weight, very good length. Some complexity here. Jan 2011..
La Valentina Spelt Montepulciano D'abruzzo 2005, Doc
Abruzzo, Italy$28.95
Dark ruby moving to garnet. An intense nose of dark fruits, blackberry, earth and spice. Dry with plentiful smooth tannins. A medium weight mid-palate adds more fruit, sour cherry, oak and more earth. Medium plus acid. Decent finish. Nice. March 2011.
Señorio De Barahinda Bellum Providencia 2006, Do Yecla
Spain$14.95
Dark stewed fruit on the nose along with raisins, tobacco and a bit of earth. A full bodied dry wine with above average concentration. More ripe, almost liqueured fruit on the palate. Medium fairly smooth tannins and acid. A long finish with a bit of hotness. March 2011.
