Renato Ratti Marcenasco Barolo 2006, Docg
Piedmont, Italy$49.95
A good Barolo here from Ratti, with a very mature flavour profile and a long finish. The flavours have moved into the dried fruit category with some oxidative notes creeping in that suggest that this red in perhaps just past its peak. Still, an enjoyable wine. Tasted June 2020.
Tawse Sketches Of Niagara Riesling 2014, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$18.95
A fairly rich (for Niagara) Riesling, with citrus, peaches and more citrus. A bit sweeter than I expected, though the cool climate acidity keeps it from tasting cloying. A very fine and more than reasonably priced Riesling. though I do wish it was just a bit drier. tasted Dec 2016.
Quinta Das Carvalhas Touriga Nacional 2011, Doc Douro
Douro, Portugal$21.95
A deeply coloured, big, ripe Touriga Nacional. Fine structure and acidity provide great balance to all the ripe fruit and oak plays a well-judged supporting role. No holes or gaps from start to finish, this is a superb bottle of Douro. Fine drinking now, but surely can hold at least a few more years. Decant for sediment. Tasted March 2018.
Château Boutisse 2010, Ac Saint émilion Grand Cru
Bordeaux, France$33.75
Super right-bank Bdx. Juicy ripe fruit, well judged oak, balanced tannin and acidity. Drinking well now but still several years ahead of it I should think. Fine value compared to the $100+ classified growth reds. Tasted June 2019.
Château Haut Selve Réserve 2010, Ac Graves
Bordeaux, France$27.95
Nicely balanced Graves here from the heavily hyped 2010 vintage. Ripe yet properly lean enough (this isn't Napa, you know). Fairly youthful still 7+ years on, with fresh acidity and bright slightly herbal fruit. Oak is nicely folded in save some notable bitterness on the finish (hence the sub 90-pt score). Drinking nicely now, but surely can hold several more years. Tasted Mar 2018.
Château Saint Roch De Laurens 2007, Ac Faugères
Languedoc, France$18.95
Loaded with ripe dark fruit, dried meat, herbs and smoke. Seductive with fine depth and structure. The syrah really shows here to my taste. A bit more pricey than other wines from the south of France, but worth the few extra $$.
Domaine Du Grand Montmirail Vacqueyras 2009, Ac
Rhône, France$24.95
65% Grenache and 35% Syrah according to several websites, this Vacqueyras could almost be mistaken for a North Rhone. Crisp dark fruit, with lots of spice and black pepper, perhaps owing to its relatively high syrah component or perhaps a slightly cooler site. Whatever, this is an intriguing and vibrant red, with fine complexity and good structure. Drinking nicely at 6 years of age, there is no rush to drink this, it should keep another 5. Well worth $25. Tasted Oct 2015.
Château Filhot 2007, Ac Sauternes (375ml)
Bordeaux, France$22.00
Lots of citrus, especially oranges, with hints of peach and honey. Very sweet as one would expect, with a bit of spice on the finish. Long finish. Very delicious now, but should age for some time. Much cheaper and more ejnjoyable than ice wines.
Giacosa Fratelli Bussia Barolo 2009
Piedmont, Italy$39.95
Typically pale Barolo here, with tart sour cherry flavours, hints of faded flowers and truffles. Complex and still a bit tight, finish with crisp tannin and brisk acidity. I really think that this still needs 2-3 years to hit its peak but lovely now. Tasted Dec 2017.
Wynns Coonawarra Estate Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, Coonawarra, South Australia
South Australia, Australia$27.95
Not much to add to the other reviews. This is a superb and balanced Cabernet. Bordeaux can only dream to produce a wine at this quality for under $30. Decant if drinking now, or better hold for a few more years. Tasted April 2016.
