Almeida Garrett Entre Serras 2015, Doc Beira Interior Bottle
Almeida Garrett Entre Serras 2015, Doc Beira Interior
Portugal
$12.95

A bit blunt and unpolished, but there is alot of flavour for the money. Nice punchy dark fruit, a decent (if slighly astrigent) finish, but I rather liked this. You could do alot worse for $13. Agree with David, buy a few and see how they age over the next couple of years. Tasted Aug 2019.

Aveleda Fonte 2019, Doc Vinho Verde Bottle
Aveleda Fonte 2019, Doc Vinho Verde
Vinho Verde, Portugal
$13.00

Slightly fizzy, low alcohol (9.5% ABV), with 15 g of residual sugar. Sounds like a wine to be avoided....but, it is a decent wine, Simple, yes (it is only $12), but the sweetness is not cloying thanks to the crisp acidity, there are no off-flavours, it is pleasant. In short, it is as it is intended to be - a light wine for sipping (or gulping) without contemplation on a hot day without getting hammered (or at least, only slowly). Tasted Aug 2021.

Château Grand Escalion Safranée 2018, Ap Costières De Nîmes, Rhône Bottle
Château Grand Escalion Safranée 2018, Ap Costières De Nîmes, Rhône
Rhône, France
$14.95

A flavourful spicy red from the south Rhone. Very typical of the region, with lots of rich, ripe fruit and notes of local herbs. Not particularly complex or long finishing but perfectly in line with its $15 price tag. Quite delicious. For near term consumption, Tasted March 2021.

Grosset Création Cairanne Côtes Du Rhône Villages 2017, A.O.C. Cairanne Bottle
Grosset Création Cairanne Côtes Du Rhône Villages 2017, A.O.C. Cairanne
Rhône, France
$17.95

Inexpensive for the appellation, this Cairanne is a soft, authentic CdR, with typical herb/spice-infused dark fruit. While not particularly complex, it is enjoyable, if a bit blunt. Solid value for $18. Fine bbq wine for this summer. Tasted May 2021.

Foncalieu Prestige Fitou 2019, A.P. Bottle
Foncalieu Prestige Fitou 2019, A.P.
Languedoc, France
$12.95

I don't think that I have ever seen a Fitou at such a low price at the LCBO. The dark fruit is backed by notable herbs and notes of black pepper. Oak is non-existent (likely since it was not aged in oak), and decent complexity and length. $12.95? Really?? This might be the value of the year at Vintages. Really good wine! Tasted Aug 2021.

Fattoria Di Piazzano Ventoso Sangiovese 2019, I.G.T. Toscana Bottle
Fattoria Di Piazzano Ventoso Sangiovese 2019, I.G.T. Toscana
Tuscany, Italy
$17.00

A little brett on the nose, but nothing off-putting in my bottle, This Sangiovese certainly leans toward the more rustic side of the grape's expression, but there is no doubting its origin, Sour cherry, a bit of cured meat, some dried fruit and brisk tannin and acidity on the finish. I'd opt to drink this sooner than later, but interesting wine if not to everyone's taste. Tasted May 2022.

Certainly mature, but by no means over the hill. Good ripe fruit, balanced, with hints of herbs and pepper. Relatively simply but spot on and pleasurable, Drink in the near term. Tasted Nov 2024.

Solid, honest right bank red. A bit lean and tart but some nice red berry fruit, and a bit of an herbal finish. Really liked this wine for not much cash especially. Tasted May 2025.

Emu Australian Apera Medium Dry Bottle
Emu Australian Apera Medium Dry
Australia
$10.55

Simple, but pleasant sherry-style wine from Australia. Wines like this from outside of Spain are no longer labelled "sherry" as that name is reserved for sherries made in the Jerez region - this one is called Apera, Pleasant notes of dried fruit with hints of citrus (orange/lemon), with crisp acidity and not too sweet. Nothing special, but fine enough for $9. Tasted Dec 2017.
