Tamaya Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2011, Limari Valley Bottle
Tamaya Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2011, Limari Valley
Limari Valley, Chile
$14.95

Remember "Spinal Tap": "How much blacker could this be? ..none more black". That describes the colour of this wine. Beyond that is a ripe, but balanced Cab that is complex, firm and balanced and tastes more like Bordeaux than most Parkerized reds from Bordeaux. Turns a bit lean on the finish but this is quite a mouthful for $15. Tasted Nov 2012.

Domaine Puig Parahy Cuvée Georges 2010, Ac Côtes De Roussillon
Languedoc, France
$17.95

Juicy, bright red fruit, with noted local herbs and pepper. Good concentration, a bit more sweet than the '07, and it does just have an ok finish. Still, a most enjoyable wine despite the additional $2 gouge courtesy of our wine monoploy. Tasted Nov 2012.

Leone De Castris Maiana Salice Salentino 2009, Doc

$14.95

Big, ripe red from Puglia with notes of dried fruit, spice and leather. A bit rustic, sure, but I loved the authenticity of the wine. Nice depth and finish for a wine of about $14. A great wine to take the chill off a cold winter day. Tasted. Dec 2012.

I disagree with JS and SA. To my taste, this wine is still very much alive and showing no negative signs of age (bottle variation?). The fruit is bright and vibrant, and while the tannin is noted, it is not obtrusive. The finish is just average to good, but its only a $16 bottle of wine. Nice value. Tasted Nov 2013.

Cave Spring Riesling 2011, VQA Niagara Peninsula Bottle
Cave Spring Riesling 2011, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada
$14.95

A no-brainer purchase in Riesling year in and year out. The '11 version is light-bodied but has plenty of flavour. Lemony citrus flavours with hints of peaches. The wine has just the perfect touch of residual sweetness to balance the Riesling acidity. Delicious now, will hold a few years. A fine value, as always. Tasted Nov 2013.

A simple but very tasty little red from Puglia. Bright red cherry flavours with brisk acidity and even some support from fine tannin. Agree with JS, best with a slight chill and with simple Italian fare. Fine value. Tasted Feb 2014.

Selvanova Vigna Antica Aglianico 2009, Igp Terre Del Volturno Bottle
Selvanova Vigna Antica Aglianico 2009, Igp Terre Del Volturno
Campania, Italy
$15.95

Aglianico has become a favourite of mine. When done well, as is the case here, it delivers and complex, structured wine that will match well to many cuisines. Powerful red fruits, along with notes of earth and dried fruits, finishing with tart cherry fruit. For $16, worth buying one to try now and another bottle or two to re-visit in a few years. Loved the regional authenticity of this wine. Tasted March 2013.

Very deeply coloured. Quite soft and approachable though enough backbone to keep from tasting flabby. Very ripe flavours in the black fruit spectrum along with hints of black pepper and smoke. Decent complexity and lingering finish. Delicious. Tasted May 2013.

Simple, low tannin cab from the south of France. Red fruit along with some herbeceousness. Finish is a bit short. Fairly priced...just....but there are better values even at the LCBO. Tasted June 2013.

9.5% abv, some spritz, fun fruity. Easy patio sipper. Fun little wine without pretention or attitude. Non-vintage or so it seems. Tasted May 2021.
