La Coterie Séguret 2009, Ac Côtes Du Rhône Villages
Rhône, France$16.95
A nicely balanced red from Seguret in the Cotes Du Rhone. Medium bodied, with plenty of red fruit, local herbs and a bit of pepper. In short, an authentic example for current enjoyment. Very good indeed.
La Vieille Ferme Côtes Du Luberon 2010, Rhône Valley
Rhône, France$10.95
Very open, tropical aromas. The palate shows mild notes of citrus and pineapple, with an odd nutty flavour and a slightly bitter finish. Decent value for current drinking.
Aubert Visan Côtes Du Rhône Villages 2009, Ac
Rhône, France$15.95
Loads of ripe red fruit, backed up with typical notes of local herbs and pepper. Fine structure and complexity. All the personality one could hope for in this price range. An outstanding value for $13, well worth a multiple bottle purchase.
Vignamaggio Terre Di Prenzano Chianti Classico 2008, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$13.25
Light-medium bodied, with typical Sangiovese flavours of sour cherries with subtle hints of vanilla. Good acidity as one would want from a Chianti. Yet, despite the apparent authenticity of this wine, I find it muted and too simple to justify the $18 price tag. I had superior Chiantis for half the cots in my travels to Tuscany a few years back. Drink now. Tasted March 2012.
Château Saint Maurice Les Grès Côtes Du Rhône Villages Laudun 2009, Ac
Rhône, France$15.95
Plenty of ripe fruit, along with characteristic notes of pepper and local herbs. Not particularly complex or long, but very satisfying regardless. Reasonable value. Drink over the next few years. Tasted March 2012.
Finca La Escondida Reserva Chardonnay 2010, San Juan
San Juan, Argentina$14.95
Crisp, fresh with nice citrus fruit. Oak is kept well in the background. Easy summer sipper for not too much money. The good acidity should make it a good match to richer cream-based foods...or fine for sipping on its own on the deck on a hot summer afternoon. Tasted June 2012.
Crasto Vinho Tinto 2010, Doc Douro
Portugal$15.95
Deeply coloured with notable floral aromas. Approachable, with delicious dark berry fruit and perhaps a hint of sweetness. The 2010 vintage of this perennial favourite of mine seems a bit less complex and structured than prior vintages, and the finish is just a bit clipped. Still, this shows good regional authenticity and is good value. Tasted April 2013.
Perrin Réserve 2010, Ac Côtes Du Rhône
Rhône, France$15.95
Soft, inviting, with ripe fruit (leaning toward the red berry spectrum), notes of herbs and pepper. Very typical Cotes du Rhone and very enjoyable. One of the best Reserve CdR from Perrin that I have tasted and a very good value. Be sure to serve it slightly cool. Tasted July 2012.
Ogier Heritages Cotes Du Rhone 2010
Rhône, France$14.95
A value-priced Cotes du Rhone from the LCBO general list. Good red fruit, with notes of pepper and herbs. Very decent complexity and regional character for a $13 wine. Ready to drink or can hold short term. Very fine value. Tasted May 2012.
Castaño La Casona Monastrell 2011, Yecla
Spain$9.65
Nice fruit, with pronounced herbal notes and spice. A dead ringer for a Cotes Du Rhone. A bit simple and not the depth of more expensive examples, but nice value at just $9. Certainly a worthy wine for those on a budget. Tasted April 2013.
