Gabriel Meffre La Châsse Grande Réserve 2016, A.P. Vacqueyras
Rhône, France$19.95
Much like the '15, this is an authentic, no-frills south Rhone red, with plenty of peppery/herb-infused fruit. While not up to better examples of Vacqueyras, it is priced lower, more in line with CdR Villages wines. Seems to be at (not yet beyond) its drinking peak, but best to consume over the next 6-12 months. Delicious wine and good value. Tasted Dec 2021.
Saint Roch Vieilles Vignes Syrah/Grenache 2018, A.P. Côtes Du Roussillon
Languedoc, France$16.95
Ripe, verging on super-ripe red from the Roussillon. This wine is a consistent sold value loaded with herbs, dark fruit and soft tannin. A bit of alcohol heat detracts on the finish but still a delicious red. Tasted Feb 2022.
Mastroberardino Mastro 2019, I.G.T.
Campania, Italy$19.95
Light in colour, light in body, light on flavour Meh, Overpriced. Tasted March 2022.
Gaïa De Château Puybarbe 2019, Ac Côtes De Bourg, Vegan, Sustainable
Bordeaux, France$16.95
So refreshing to taste a Bordeaux that is not overwhelmed by masses of oak and tannin. This cheeky little right-banker is mostly Merlot as one would expect, but with a significant dose of Cab Sauv. Ripe and delicious, with no hard edges and a fine finish. Clever stuff indeed and now I wish that I had bottle a few more bottles at $16. Drinking well now, should hold a couple or fe more year or thereabouts. Tasted Jun 2024.
Cecchi Storia Di Famiglia Chianti Classico 2019, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$17.95
A bit lower acidity than some CC but has the requisite red fruit, light tannin and decent depth. Smooth and tasty, a solid wine for the money. Not for ageing, more near term consumption, Tasted Aug 2022.
Croix De Bonpas Côtes Du Rhone Villages 2019, A.C.
Rhône, France$17.95
A well-made, smooth Cotes du Rhone, with no rough edges. No great depth or complexity but lots of south Rhone character and balance. All to easy to sip. Not for ageing, enjoy this year to capture that fruit. Tasted April 2022.
Château De La Chapelle 2018, Sustainable, Ac Blaye Côtes De Bordeaux
Bordeaux, France$20.95
Solid right-bank merlot-based red. Nice balance or flavours and oak, For drinking now through 2025. Tasted Oct 2022.
Rémy Ferbras Terre De Mistral Plan De Dieu Côtes Du Rhône Villages 2018, Ap
Rhône, France$15.95
Great value in south Rhone red. Tasted Nov 2022
Cabriz Colheita Selecionada 2020, Doc Dão
Dão, Portugal$13.95
A rarity these days,,,,a good wine at Vintages for $15. An easy-going but distinctive red from the Dao, a wine that always seems to be delicious. I like the balanced flavours, acidity and overall drinkability, Just 13% abv. Easy multi-bottle purchase. Tasted Oct 2023.
Navascués Enología Cutio Garnacha 2019, D.O. Cariñena
Aragón, Spain$14.25
A delicious Full-bodied red made from blend of garnacha and cariñena. Loads of big ripe fruit and hints of herbs, not too far off a Cotes du Rhone. Picked up on sale at about $14, a steal. Not for keeping, just chill a bit and enjoy in the next 12 months or so. Tasted Sep 2024.
