Antolini Recioto Della Valpolicella Classico 2007, Doc (500ml)
Veneto, Italy$28.95
Traditional Amarone notes - but with a sweeter edge.
I found this refreshingly less-sweet than some dessert wines can be, with a nice balance of acid to carry it through. And as a red of course it's somewhat distinctive.
Dark cherries, raisins, and a medium-long finish.
Tasted April 2014.
The Bend In The River Riesling 2014, Rheinhessen
Germany$11.95
A pleasant, lower-alcohol Landwein for easy summer sipping.
Characteristic of Riesling, but not overly expressive. Cirtrus on the nose, green apple and lemon off-dry palate. Finish is less fruit and slightly unbalanced.
At the extreme value end, a reasonable cottage sip for those on a budget.
Poole's Rock Chardonnay 2008, Hunter Valley, New South Wales
Australia$44.95
Nose of almonds, brioche, ripe Bartlett pear and apple.
On the palate, creamy mouthfeel with a long finish. Fruit is evident, balanced with great structure and acidity. Mineral notes on the mid-palate elevate considerably. Hints of exotic fruit (lychee). There's a lot going on here.
A stunning Chardonnay in structure, flavour and depth.
Tasted October 2014.
