Balbas Reserva 2001, Do Ribera Del Duero Bottle
Balbas Reserva 2001, Do Ribera Del Duero
Ribera Del Duero, Spain
$20.95

At first glance, it's almost impossible to believe this is 12 years old. Purple in the glass with loads of dark fruit and vanilla on the nose. The tannins are quite soft and there's reasonable acidity, which makes this a quite enjoyable and refreshing. The length is quite long as well. All in all, it's a well done wine, though over-oaked for my taste. Was also disappointed of not getting the characteristics of an aged wine. If I hadn't seen the vintage date though, I would have been pretty happy drinking this. Tasted June 2013.

Calina Reserva Carmenère 2009, Maule Valley

$15.95

This inky purple Carmenere delivers up aromas of black berry, vanilla, sweet baking spice, and a bit of chocolate. These flavours continue on the palate with the black fruit dominating. This wine is quite luscious in the mouth with medium tannins and nice refreshing acidity and a reasonably long finish. While not a stunner, it's a pleasant wine, particularly for the price. Tasted April 2012.

Muga Rosé 2011, Doca Rioja Bottle
Muga Rosé 2011, Doca Rioja

Always one of my favourite roses year after year simply because of its soft, juicy, friendly flavours. Pale salmon in the glass, the nose is a lovely blend of tart cranberry, raspberry, and strawberry along with some pink grapefruit thrown in the mix. Light bodied, it's dry with nice, zippy acidity and a finish that highlights the tart cranberry and grapefruit flavours. Not the most complex, but it's highly commendable simply because it's incredibly tasty on a hot summer day with a nice simple salad or light fish dish. Tasted February 2013.

Interesting bottle of wine. Lots of citrus, floral, and mineral notes of the nose. Medium to high acidity, medium body, with a slightly bitter finish that follows through with more citrus and herbal flavours. While this isn't a stunner, it's definitely interested me, especially since this is the first Rkatesiteli I've tried. At this price, I'll definitely search it out some more. Tasted June 2012.

Not bad, not great. Was hoping for a bit more from this wine. Loads of citrus on the nose, along with some a bit of spicy, oaky notes, but not a ton of complexity. Really beautiful acidity on the palate with the citrus and spice shining through. Excellent length on the finish. Just wish there was a bit more going on with this wine. Tasted October 2012.

Domaine Des Ouches Igoranda Cabernet Franc Bourgueil 2009, Ac

$15.95

This is a pretty green cabernet franc, but there's a lot to enjoy about it. Blackberry, black cherry, herbal and green pepper notes on the nose. These flavours pretty much repeat on the palate with high acidity and dry, chalky tannins. Medium-bodied with an average length finish. Let it sit for a bit or make sure you have it with protein. Not too shabby, particularly for the cost. Tasted July 2012.

Domaine Puig Parahy Cuvée Georges 2010, Ac Côtes De Roussillon

Really solid bottle of wine. Lots of black fruit on the nose, but more jammy and dried out than fresh. Blackberry jam and prune notes along with more savoury herbacous and meaty, smokey notes, though the fruit is most definitely at the forefront. On the palate, it's lacking some complexity, though the price means I can't complain. The acidity is somewhat surprising as it's nice and fresh with are reasonably low though have some lingering grippiness suggesting this could last 3-4 years. Quite enjoyable, particularly with some BBQ or braised meats. Tasted December 2012.

Tscharke Barossa Gold Marananga Cabernet Sauvignon 2010, Barossa Valley, South Australia

Dark purple in the glass with aromas of blackberry jam, cassis, smoke and vanilla.
These soft, fruity qualities continue on the palate. It has medium-low acidity with medium tannins and has medium to long length on the finish. There's nothing objectionable about this wine, but there's also nothing that stands out. it's just a soft, easy-drinking wine for cold winter nights. Tasted January 2013.

Luis Felipe Edwards Gran Reserva Roussanne 2010, Colchagua Valley Bottle
Luis Felipe Edwards Gran Reserva Roussanne 2010, Colchagua Valley
Colchagua Valley, Chile
$12.75

Beeswax, honey, pear, and stone fruit on the nose. These aromas were only apparent once the wine warmed after a considerable time out of the fridge (about an hour or so). On the palate, ripe melon and stone fruit are most dominant. It is medium-full bodied, medium acidity, and has reasonable length on the finish. Would have like to pay a couple $$ less, but this is the first Roussanne i've had from Chile, so I can't complain. Tasted January 2013.

Selvanova Vigna Antica Aglianico 2009, Igp Terre Del Volturno

After drinking wines at the California Wine Fair today, this is a massive change in style. Complex nose of black cherry, dried herbal and flower notes, and earthiness as well. On the palate, this wine almost a bit harsh, but in a good way. High acid and tannins with an incredibly dry and somewhat bitter finish, it requires some food (paired nicely with prosciutto, salami, etc) and an open mind. Could use a couple of years to soften up, but it will never be a bottle that will please fruit bomb lovers. Tasted April 2013.
