Sabor Real Viñas Centenarias Tempranillo 2007, Do Toro
Castilla y León, Spain$15.95
Me likey very much, but this wine needs to lay down for a couple more years. Purple teeth staining, deep violet in the glass. Rich chocolate cherry and earth brewed w/ strong coffee on the nose. Saskatoonberry acidity, chewy choco tannins, full body and ripe finish. Drink 2015 or tonite with bbq smoked pork chops or braised lamb shanks. Tasted Nov '11
Grotta Del Sole Falanghina Dei Campi Flegrei 2009, Doc
Campania, Italy$13.45
Tight, clean and well structured. Pale straw with medium + viscosity. Aromas are wound and not overly expressive of white flower, green melon, honeyed almond, mineral and apple. Ample texture for med + to fuller white fish dishes like cod, with whitewine butter sauces, almondine or lemon cream spinach. Follow through of floral apple, mineral and yellow plum pit on the palate. Enjoy with seafood over the next 2 years. Tasted Jan '12
Château Piron 2008, Ac Montagne St émilion
Bordeaux, France$13.85
This is my lowest scoring wine on Wine Align, and one of the least pleasurable wines I have tasted in a while. I prefer my fathers home made kit wine. The colour would make me think it was at least 10 yrs old. Low intensity on aroma, maybe some barrel spice and sour cherry. The wine was flabby yet highly acidic at the same time. Use for cooking or marinating. Tasted Mar '12.
Perrin Réserve 2010, Ac Côtes Du Rhône
Rhône, France$15.95
$17.49 at SLGA. Another fair, easy to drink, gateway Rhone. One that your "Malbec friends" might tolerate. Lots of spiced plummy and strawberry jammy type things going on - both nose and palate. Mild peppery spice on the medium finish. Little bit lacking in acid and depth, but overall a fair wine. Drink over next 2 years. Tasted Jan '14.
Domaine Pierre De La Grange Vielle Vignes Muscadet Sèvre Et Maine 2010, Ac, Sur Lie
Loire, France$14.95
Solid Muscadet over-delivering for the price. Lots of citrus, mineral and saline notes throughout. Some ripe pear and green melon give this a richness and soft mouthfeel. Very refreshing- a great wine to crush out on the back deck after work or of course with a dozen or so oysters.
Domaine Corne Loup Tavel Rosé 2011, Ac
Rhône, France$17.95
Pretty deep pink to light cherry colour in the glass. Pretty and elegant on the nose with juicy red fruit. Aromas remininscent of fresh strawberry tossed with honey and a crack of white pepper followed by floral lavender and raspberry. The mouthfeel is dry, balanced and refreshing acidity with a nice mineral finish. Classic Tavel, this is what Rose should be like. Was perfect on a summer Sunday afternoon. Pair with outside, sun and any summer fare. Drink now. Tasted Aug '12.
Quieto 3 Malbec 2009, Mendoza
Mendoza, Argentina$17.95
A tight lil' Malbec that needs a decantin. Deep ruby with a violet hue and some thickness in the glass. The nose is savoury, toasty and pruney all at once. Dried purple plum, reduced soya sauce, charcoal and rosemary aromas emerge after some coaxing. The mouth is fullish, has a stewed fruit sweetness, pleasant tannin and expected citric acid - acidity. In all, fairly compact yet big enough and easy enough to put back. Sticky ribs, pulled pork, or mole dishes. Drink over next 2 years. Tasted Dec '13
Duboeuf Beaujolais Villages Nouveau 2012
Burgundy, France$14.95
I found this just a touch leaner, more tannic and stemmier than the Joseph Drouhin. Still a pleasure to drink, the wine is fun highly crushable. Raspberry cotton candy but lined with a green herb and white pepper lining that remind you its Gamay. i like the earthy-fruity balance that speaks of real winemaking sense of place. Enjoy with the finest cocktail wieners you can find. Drink when you get it home.
Abad Dom Bueno Mencía 2008, Do Bierzo
Galicia, Spain$16.95
Deep ruby with a violet trim the appearance still shows deep vibrancy for 4 years of age. Chug the wine through your decanter to blow off that bit of matchstick to find some violet, cherry, red clay and plum scented wax. This Mencia is med+ body with cool nights acid and still tight tannin for the age. It's not overly complex but the structure will give enjoyment over next 4 years. Grilled meats or rich stews. Dieter Meier Puro Corte 2010, Agrelo Alto, Mendoza
Mendoza, Argentina$16.95
Thick, rich, chocolatey and fruit packed. Normally I would have nothing good to say about a warm climate, over extracted, alcoholic fruit bomb, but this wine has a bit of hutzpah that allows me to enjoy it. Even though I find it slightly sweet, the wine is soft and very easy to put back. Black fruit, chocolate, coffee and a touch of pepper. Good choice when your in the mood for something voluptuous that wont cost a lot and will show you the goods right away. Will stand up to chocolate desserts or Blue cheese burgers. Tasted Sept '13
