Jean Leon 3055 Chardonnay 2012, Do Penedès
Penedès, Spain$16.25
Tasted a three chards from the Torres folks at I4C, I must say this was the least impressive out of the bunch, but that does not mean it's not a good wine. Judging it on it's own merits, it stands up tall with buttery grace and elegance. The finish falls apart however. weak and short. over all it's a simple wine with a cool label.
E R A Montepulciano D' Abruzzo 2012, Doc
Abruzzo, Italy$9.95
Great for the price! Juicy and rustic, medium to full bodied. Nice suave feel with noticeable tannins. Violets, cassis, charcoal, vanilla, smoke and a little earthy barnyard. Finishes with a hint of sour. Fantastic QPR...a perfect wine to sip on during the mundane work week.
Vieni Aglianico 2011, VQA Vinemount Ridge, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$22.75
This is gorgeous juice…I love the silky texture. It’s an appassimento style of Aglianico that I believe works rather well here in Niagara. It offers a softness and a roundness to the wine to offset the aggressive acids. It’s packed with wild herbs and spiced cherries. I really enjoyed sipping this wine at Cuvee.
Le Bord Eaux Du Clos Des Moiselles, Ac Bordeaux
Bordeaux, France$16.85
The nose bursts with a mix of classic bordeaux and new world fruit. Berries, earth, burnt sugar, with hints of cedar. The palate is suave and finishes with a delicious dose of milk chocolate. This is a soft seductive merlot with supple tannins.
Duck Pond Pinot Noir 2012, Oregon
Oregon, Usa$29.95
Not sure what all the controversy is about...Terrible score from Lawrason, average from the rest of the WA crew... I found nothing terribly wrong here. The nose bursts with bright ripe cherries and vanilla with hints of smoke. The palate is juicy and delicious with bright cherry, cran-raspberry and vanilla. Short but juicy finish. You can purchase this bottle for $15 in the USA, so my only complaint is the LCBO mark up.
Charles Smith The Velvet Devil 2013
Washington, Usa$16.95
This starts with some off-putting cheap wine scents, but slowing revives itself. It drinks like velvet (as the name insinuates) and delivers lots of coco whoppers on the palate. In the end, I throughly enjoyed this wine.
Château Faizeau 2012, Ac Montagne Saint émilion
Bordeaux, France$32.95
This smells like cherry and cedar...just like a cigar box. The palate is a little thin and gassy but quite drinkable. Nice but typically over priced Bordeaux.
Bertolani Rosé, Doc Lambrusco Reggiano, Emilia Romagna, Italy
Emilia Romagna, Italy$14.95
Not really impressed. It's drinkable, but suffers from over ripe fruit. Pretty basic stuff. Pretty colour and label though.
Ilauri Le Pinciaie Montelpulciano D'abruzzo 2013, Doc
Abruzzo, Italy$14.25
After a swift decant this wine really shows nicely. Prunes, cherries, oak, caramel with a tough of funky earth. The palate has structure, with sweet and sour fruit on the finish. Lovely little number for the price.
Pipoli Aglianico Del Vulture 2013, D.O.C.
Basilicata, Italy$15.95
Don't listen to the WA folks, they're always after the same style of wine - underripe and acidic (fresh in their words) showing sense of place...give me a break...this wine is structured and shows oak seasoning as it should for a full bodied ripe wine. Critics hate ripe wines with oak because they say they are not a reflection of place - which actually means that they're not traditionally made. If you're not bound by the mentality of the wine snobs, you will most definitely enjoy this wine. Feel free to give me a thumbs down WA Wolfpack.
