Bellingham The Bernard Series Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2012, Coastal Region
South Africa$22.95
Quite possibly one of the best white wines I've ever had...ever, seriously. This wine is ripe and lush, but also lean, crisp and focused. A beautiful creamy full body that matches quality ripe fruit. It's like a creamy chardonnay (minimal oak) meets an Alsace Pinot gris. This is wine I adore.
Tawse Quarry Road Chardonnay 2011, VQA Vinemount Ridge, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$34.95
Love Tawse Chards tasted this one at the winery beside the 2010 vintage, and i think i prefer the 2010. it was a fuller wine with smoother edges and a creaminess to it.
Grand Vin De Glenelly Red 2009, Wo Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch, South Africa$19.95
Tight tannins, complex flavours, however I found the acid too high, so a tad off balance in my opinion. Acidheads will rejoice.
Kenwood Jack London Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2010, Sonoma Mountain
California, Usa$39.95
Great tannin structure reminds me of Bordeaux or even the Bella Terra wines from Pondview Winery in the Niagara Region. Finesse instead of jammy. Hints of smoky oak and vanilla-nail polish on the finish. Nice wine with some tension that drinks well now. Not a blockbuster at all, something tells me even California is changing their ways.
Flat Rock The Rusty Shed Chardonnay 2011, VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$24.95
This has become my go to chardonnay. As David points out, it really offers a little bit of everything. It's creamy and buttery with tropical fruit and exotic wood-smoke spice notes. A creamy texture on the palate that is balanced with freshness on the finish. This is a real complete Chardonnay the bridges together warm and cool climate styles.
Achaval Ferrer Malbec 2011, Mendoza
Mendoza, Argentina$25.95
The nose is seductive - perfume like offering fresh cherries, violets and rose petals, herbal cough syrup, mint, cherry-chocolates and more. Very seductive. The palate is smooth and creamy with super fine tannins. It has a long herbal induced finish. Punches way above the price!
La Gerla Brunello Di Montalcino 2009, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$63.95
very elegant. Light bodied and smooth. Cheery and herbs - actually reminds me of a mature cab franc from Niagara.
Stratus Stratus Cabernet Franc 2007, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$38.20
A re-release of this wine is available for purchase at the winery at a premium of $42…ahhh yes a little on the expensive side… But considering the plush quality of this gracefully aged wine, I think it’s worth it. It’s not an everyday wine. It’s a special treat to be enjoyed over a celebration. Actually, opening this beauty is a bit of a celebration in itself. I know Stratus’ blends are wonderfully composed, but I’m a sucker for single varietal Niagara Cabernet Franc, especially when it of this quality. This wine has just started to peak and I imaging will continue to drink well for another 3-5 years. Secondary savory notes have blossomed beyond the fruit - Sweet tobacco, autumn leaves, herbs, dried rose petals, cherry concentrate, vanilla oak and so much more. Suave and graceful on the palate. Like I said, a real treat!
Dei Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano 2010, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$27.95
Classic Vino Nobile...like a baby Brunello. Super fine tannins and subtle complexities. Classy stuff.
