Cecchi Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano 2011
Tuscany, Italy$21.95
Home run wine for the price! Woodsmoke, ripe cherries with hints of ash and tomato leaf. Super refined tannins and soft acids provide a lushness on the palate and on the finish. Old world wine nurds will rejoice. ...especially at this price!
Yalumba Menzies The Cigar Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, Coonawarra
South Australia, Australia$29.95
I was hoping for a little more richness, although I know Coonawarra is not typically known for richness, I was thinking Yalumba - this has got to be dripping with oak and sweetness...but no- this is balanced and lean. It has a hint of vanilla oak, herbal goodness and a nice tight finish.
Carpineto Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano Riserva 2008, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$29.95
Cherry, pipe tobacco, woodsmoke, structured with grippy tannins. There's a little citrus that shows up as well. I don't love this wine, however it's definitely nice.
Muruve Crianza 2010
Castilla y León, Spain$17.95
Too strong, astringent and dry. The oak and fruit are nice but not very balanced...okay sorry starting to sound like a snobby douch...nice wine with smoky vanilla berries...just not WOW fantastico, if ya know what I mean.
Borgogno Langhe Freisa 2012, Doc
Piedmont, Italy$21.95
This is a charming little wine. I love the old school label. It's charming because it's light bodied but packs incredible structure and finesse. There's hints of sweet cherries, herbs and tobacco. I loved the grippy fresh finish!
Pérez Cruz Reserva Limited Edition Carmenère 2012
Maipo Valley, Chile$19.95
A bold structured wine with plenty of quality tannin. Mint, Blueberry, Herbs and Spice.
Château De Nages J T Costières De Nîmes 2012, Ac
Rhône, France$26.95
This is a fairly plush, medium weight Rhone blend. Cherries, hot rock and smoky ash on the nose. The palate adds licorice, violets and coco powder. Dusty tannins add grip to the finish. Good value for $20. BIG TIP - decant for an hour - this get much richer, rounder and smoother.
Ravine Vineyard Chardonnay 2008, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$24.00
not too oaky, but the wood is noticable...i picked up a salty minerality. a little lighter bodied than i prefer at this price point but still very charming.
Nobilo Icon Pinot Noir 2013, Marlborough, South Island
Marlborough, New Zealand$24.75
By Marlborough standards, this is very lean. It reminds me of Niagara actually. There's lots of Pinot character - cherry, vanilla, hints of cola, smoke and wet earth. It's crisp and dry. A lovely little Pinot at a fair price.
Avondale Jonty's Ducks Pekin White 2015, Wo Paarl
Paarl, South Africa$16.95
Pungent nose...offering ripe peaches and pears with a fresh dose of sea salt air. The palate starts with a kiss of sweetness but quickly transitions back to a fresh ocean saltiness. I'm salivating for oysters...what a perfect little seafood gem.
