Domaine De Bila Haut Occultum Lapidem 2012, Ac Côtes De Roussillon Villages Latour De France
Languedoc, France$26.95
This wine just suited my taste perfectly. It has a complex aroma with earthy, leathery notes and strong cassis. Full on the tongue with a nice finish. This wine has legs (14.5%) and paired really beautifully with prime rib.
Quinta Do Vallado Vinho Tinto 2011
Douro, Portugal$22.95
Earthy and full of rock and mineral taste - typical of grapes grown in the schist soils found in the Douro Valley. A nice wine - nothing too aggressive with a somewhat dry mouth feel.
Farnese Casale Vecchio Montepulciano D'abruzzo 2013
Abruzzo, Italy$10.95
Dark ruby to purple in colour, the nose is full of blackberries, dried fruits, baking spices and mocha. Taste is on the drier side (which suited me, but not my wife) with a long finish. As mentioned in other reviews, this is reminiscent of a Ripasso, and a bargain at the price.
Frisky Beaver White 2013, VQA Ontario
Ontario, Canada$13.95
Light, refreshing and pleasing with stone fruit flavours along with some mild floral and tropical notes. A little subdued on the palette, but excellent on a hot day.
Trapiche Reserve Syrah 2013, Mendoza
Argentina$11.95
This wine was a bit of a surprise. I picked it up as a backup bottle for a dinner party where we only drank wine from Argentina, and it turned out to be the favourite wine of the night. The strong black pepper on the nose and the good finish stacked up very well against the more expensive bottles of Malbec served. A bargain at the price.
Finca Los Alijares Graciano 2009, Vino De La Tierra De Castilla
Spain$17.95
A very interesting wine that showed a profile I would not normally associate with Spanish wines. The flavour was tight and controlled with blackberries, cassis and hints of black licorice. The tannins were quite firm, and the finish was pleasingly dry. This wine was almost Italian in style.
Nipozzano Vecchie Viti Riserva Chianti Rúfina 2011, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$29.95
An excellent chianti, this wine presents a composed, dusty and elegant taste. This is coupled with a pleasing rustic note. For friends of chianti, this is a winner.
Boschendal 1685 S & M 2013
South Africa$16.75
I'm a fan of South African wine for the bold flavours and rustic flavour profiles. This is a big wine, but has a lot of barnyard on the nose...a little too much for my tastes.
M. Chapoutier Les Vignes De Bila Haut Côtes Du Roussillon Villages 2013, Ac
Languedoc, France$15.95
This is an excellent value wine that shows some nice spicy, warm elements that are typical of this region. Although not as good as the "Occultum Lapidem" (reserve) bottling, it still has a full flavour and good finish.
Château De Gourgazaud Cuvée Mathilde Minervois 2013, Ac
Languedoc, France$14.95
A good value wine. Strong red fruit flavours are complimented well by a nice application of oak. Not the best wine tasted during the evening, but a solid choice nonetheless.
