Mullineux Kloof Street Red 2014
South Africa$15.75
Complex, earthly with strong pepper notes expected from the shiraz component. A powerful wine that holds it all together with elegance - and a bargain at the price.
Alsace Willm Gewurztraminer 2013, Ac Alsace
Alsace, France$17.95
This wine was well balanced and composed. In a blind tasting of 6 Gewürztraminers, it came off as one of the more elegant bottles. It has a lovely brightness to it, and a long finish with a bit of spice (white pepper?).
Tasted blind at a Beefsteak & Burgundy Club event, September 2015.
Domaine Terlato & Chapoutier Lieu Dit Malakoff Shiraz 2011, Pyrenees
Victoria, Australia$35.25
A little bit of age seems to have helped this wine. It is a mix of styles and flavours; big on the palette like you expect from a typical Australian wine, but with secondary aromas of cedar and earth expected from old world wines. It shows a pleasing level of complexity, but doesn't deserve a higher score as for the price the depth and length should have been greater.
The Wolftrap White 2013, Boekenhoutskloof
Western Cape, South Africa$13.95
This wine has a nice flavour profile, with a lot of stone fruit and floral notes. It is a bit buttery compared to the crisp, herbal whites I usually drink - and it definitely needs a god chill before serving.
Villa Ponciago Beaujolais Villages 2012, Ac
Beaujolais, France$15.30
Light, fruity and refreshing. This wine is excellent for summer drinking, but as indicated by a number of reviewers - it needs a bit of time to open up.
Purchased at the LCBO when it was discontinued - for less than $7 this is an absolute steal.
Domaine De Bila Haut Occultum Lapidem 2012, Ac Côtes De Roussillon Villages Latour De France
Languedoc, France$26.95
This wine just suited my taste perfectly. It has a complex aroma with earthy, leathery notes and strong cassis. Full on the tongue with a nice finish. This wine has legs (14.5%) and paired really beautifully with prime rib.
