Saint Roch Vieilles Vignes Syrah/Grenache 2014, Ap Côtes De Roussillon
Languedoc, France$16.95
A solid Roussillon here from Saint Roch. Black fruit supported by pepper, herbs and a hint of cured meats. Quite dry (just 4g of residual sugar), with good grip and fine length, especially for such a modestly priced bottle. Delish. Tasted Feb 2018.
Dainero 2013, Igt Toscana
Tuscany, Italy$14.75
90% merlot/10% sangiovese according to the Castiglion del Bosco website, but I have to agree with MG, tis seems to have more sangiovese. Perhaps its the red cherry fruit and bright acidity that give that impression. Good complexity here and an approachable structure. Oak is well-judged and this has good energy. Not for long keeping, this is good to go now and should hold a few more years. tasted June 2017.
Pérez Cruz Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2014
Chile$14.95
A solid, dry and balanced Chilean cab. Not a hugely ripe wine, but hits the right balance. Fresh acidity, fine tannin and solid fruit. More than fair value at about $15. Easy re-purchase. Tasted Aug 2017.
Tsantali Reserve Rapsani 2012, Pdo Rapsani, Thessalia
Greece$15.75
Relatively light-weight, simple but pleasant wine, with herbal-tinged notes of red fruit. Good acidity on the finish and light tannin. DL's comparison to Cab Franc is a good one. Decent enough for $16. Tasted July 2017.
Vinum Africa Chenin Blanc 2015, Wo Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch, South Africa$15.95
Superb value in white wine. Full flavoured, yet light on the palate, with nicely judged acidity. I like the balance here between the rip fruit and the acidity. Great summer sipper with lighter foods. Tasted Aug 2017.
Genesis Xinomavro Merlot 2014, Pgi Macedonia
Macedonia, Greece$13.75
Medium bodied blend of xinomavro and merlot. Stylistically, this leans more toward the savoury old-world. I enjoyed the ripe red fruit, sour cherries, and hint of earth. A bit of vanilla checks in but doesn't get in the way of the overall character of the wine. Seems to me to be drinking quite nicely right now. Picked up on sale at $13.75...a bargain by anyone's standards. Tasted Oct 2017.
Château Francs Magnus 2015, Ac Bordeaux Supérieur
Bordeaux, France$11.75
Light-medium bodied Bordeaux, with fairly simply just-ripe fruit, as one might expect from its humble origins. Some slightly green notes of bell pepper and herbs, much like one would find in a Niagara Bdx blend. Certainly obvious the difference in ripeness, and depth/complexity of flavours compared to classified growth of say, St Emilion. Then again, you aren't paying $80 here. Fine for the price. Tasted April 2017.
Château De Sérame Minervois 2010, Ac
Languedoc, France$16.95
Certainly fully mature as the fruit is showing some slightly oxidized character. The dark fruit and herbs/spice still resonate and very little oak is noted. The taste lingers nicely. What a lovely find but don't hold too long, this is at its peak now. Tasted Sep 2017.
Yalumba The Y Series Viognier 2016, South Australia
South Australia, Australia$14.95
An interesting flavour profile with tropical fruit flavours like pineapple along with citrus fruit. A slightly viscous, almost oily texture yet still has enough acidity to keep the wine crisp an clean tasting. Really excellent value for $14. Tasted Sept 2017.
Château De Treviac 2014, Ap Corbières
Languedoc, France$17.95
What a stellar value again! Complex ripe fruit, mixed with wild herbs and hints of spice. Not at all heavy, this strikes a great balance of alcohol, tannin and acidity. Just love the regional flavours. Did I say that this was a great value? Damn, I only bought one bottle! Hope we don't have to wait long for the next vintage. Drink now or hold a few years. Tasted Oct 2017.
