Herdade Do Portocarro 2010, Torrão, Vinho Regional Península De Setúbal
Portugal$12.75
An interesting wine, but one that never really came together for me. Ripe and rich, yet finish with considerable sourness (not in a pleasant way, as with a Chianti). Some wood is noted as is a considerable oxidative note, which detracts in my view. Interesting but odd. Tasted March 2017.
Goats Do Roam White 2015, Coastal Region
Western Cape, South Africa$12.05
A very easy to like white, as in prior vintages. Clean, with just enough acidity (its not Niagara, you know), citrus fruit, a bit of apple and finishing with a bit of bitterness. For $12, this is very good value indeed. tasted March 2017.
Viña Real Crianza 2012, Doca Rioja
Rioja, Spain$18.95
Fresh Rioja, with lively red fruit, hints of leather and oak way in the background. Really like the purity here and vibrant nature. Drinking nicely now, should hold 2-3 more years. Honest wine. Nice stuff. Tasted Aug 2016
Santa Duc Roaix Les Crottes 2010, Ac Côtes Du Rhône Villages
Rhône, France$17.25
Santa Duc's wines may lean toward the more modernist camp, but, based on this CdR Villages, they have not forgotten their roots. Very ripe black fruits, spice, herbs, pepper, firm but softening tannin, perfect acidity....this wine is lovely. All that one could hope for in a southern Rhone red...and more for $17 on sale. Going back for more. Tasted Sep 2016.
Hauner Salina Rosso 2013, Igp
Sicily, Italy$17.25
Like it, nice wine. Good acidity, red fruit ....very Italian. Tasted Oct 2016
Catena Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
Argentina$19.95
It's been a long while since I've had a Catena red. They veered a little too much into the cherry-cola- sweetness infected wines for several years. Not sure why, their wines in the '90s were great. So here is the 2014, a ripe (nearly too ripe) cabernet, but mercifully avoiding the confection of some past efforts. Smooth, with some fine tannin. Good wine, best with rich stews. Tasted Oct 2016.
Château Grand Moulin Vieilles Vignes 2012, Ap Corbières
Languedoc, France$12.75
A lean and taut Corbieres. Certainly not particularly exuberant or showy, this red offers slightly tart blackberry flavours, bolstered by black pepper and herbs. Wood (if any) is a non-feature. A good wine and fine value, but best with food. Tasted July 2016.
Thymiopoulos Young Vines Xinomavro 2015, Unfiltered, Pdo Naoussa
Naoussa, Greece$18.95
Pale, translucent red. This Xinomavro has tart red fruits (think sour cherries, cranberries) and brisk acidity. Seemed a bit simple at first but developed up nicely after several minutes. Reminds me of Chianti or Barbera. Would be a lovely match to pizza or tomato-based dishes. Put in the fridge for 45 minutes before serving. Tasted Nov 2017.
Piccini Villa Al Cortile Rosso Di Montalcino 2013
Tuscany, Italy$15.25
A fairly light, lean, tart Rosso, with notes of sour cherries and a touch of vanilla. Fairly light tannin and quite high acidity on the finish. Captures some of the essence of Sangiovese but a bit simple, like a decent Chianti. Good food wine, but a bit expensive for what it is. tasted Apr 2017.
Borgo Scopeto Chianti Classico 2013, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$16.95
Fresh. lively, oodles of sour cherry/currants fruits. Nicely balanced with hints of spice, nicely judged tannin and acidity. Exactly what Chianti should be. Would be a great match with tomato=based sauces, pizza or lighter grilled fare from the bbq. Loved this. Tasted July 2017.
