Château De St. Preignan 2005, Ac Côteaux Du Languedoc
Languedoc, France$12.35
A quite decent red from the Languedoc, showing notes of dark berries, smoke and herbs. Even at 5+years of age, still showing a bit of tannin. Having said that, I don't think that the fruit will for much more than another couple of years. Nice value.
Ferraton Père & Fils Samorens Côtes Du Rhône 2007, Ac Côtes Du Rhône
Rhône, France$14.95
This Cotes du Rhone leans to the herbeceous side on the genre. Rather than the Provencal herbs than one might usually find, the herbeceousness reminds me more of some Niagara reds where the grapes do not quite reach optimal ripeness. Quite strange, coming from this region and a wamr vintage evne by their standards. Not a bad wine, just that one can do better. Not sure how Mr Parker rated this 89 - bottle variation???
Château De Pena 2006, Ac Côtes Du Roussillon Villages
Languedoc, France$13.95
Yet another great bargain from the south of France. Approachable with ripe dark fruit augmented by notes of herbs and a touch of spice. Wines like this make me want to chuck my job and move to Frances, where I am sure many more wines such as this are available. Delish. And just $14.
Domaine La Casenove La Colomina 2006, Vin De Pays Des Côtes Catalanes
Languedoc, France$15.95
Yet another bargain from the south of France. The focus here is on the fruit, or more specifically, the terroir. This is no Aussie fruit bomb, rather a fine expression of south France, with ripe red fruits, earth, spice and minerals. And no interference from oak. Perfect with Sheppard's Pie. Worthy of multiple bottle purchase.
Rivera Salice Salentino 2007, Doc
Puglia, Italy$11.35
Took a while to recalibrate my palate after largely focusing on wines from the south of France. A distinctive wine, with very good fruit, and the right amount of acidity and tannin for balance. Very fine value at $14. Drink now of hold short term.
Château Saint Maurice Les Grès Laudun Côtes Du Rhône Villages 2007, Ac
Rhône, France$14.95
First night opened, the wine displayed plenty of herbs and peppery notes but was a bit fruit-shy. On night 2, the wine really opened up and the fruit came to the fore. Amazingly, worked very well with baked salmon. I suggest decanting the wine for an hour or two if consuming now or better, hold a year or two. Fine value in a short-term cellaring Cotes Du Rhone.
Terres D'avignon Réserve Des Armoires Côtes Du Rhône 2007, Ac
Rhône, France$16.95
A delicious red with genuine Cotes du Rhone character. Medium-bodied, with good depth of fruit, and notes of herbs and black pepper. Unencumbered by any noticeable sawmill aromas. A well-made wine that represents good value.
Foss Marai Extra Dry, D.O.C.
Veneto, Italy$19.95
A pleasant simple sparkling wine, with some decent freshness and citrusy and apple flavours. Never mind the "Extra Day" on the label, this certainly has residual sugar though it is by no means cloying. Price is ok, I suppose. Tasted Dec 2021.
Baglio Di Pianetto Y Nero D'avola 2008, Igt Sicilia
Sicily, Italy$14.95
Ripe flavours, verging on (but not quite) overripe, with dark cherry notes dominating. Not particularly tannic to my taste, and finishing with a touch of sweetness. Solid value.
