Michel Gassier Les Piliers Syrah 2012, Ac Costières De Nîmes Bottle
Michel Gassier Les Piliers Syrah 2012, Ac Costières De Nîmes
Rhône, France
$18.95

Quite floral, with lean and tart blackberry fruit, citrus and a hint of bug spray (why do some syrahs taste like Raid? though I have not partaken in that particular pesticide). This wine just does not work at all for me, it's just plain weird (not, that is not terroir). Some of the negociant wines coming out of southern France are becoming really mediocre these days. Tasted April 2016.

Château Des Demoiselles 2011, Ac Côtes De Bordeaux Castillon Bottle
Château Des Demoiselles 2011, Ac Côtes De Bordeaux Castillon
Bordeaux, France
$17.95

Found this right-banker to be a bit lean and scrawny. The fruit is in the red spectrum and is a bit tart. A bit funky as well. Tannin seems well enough integrated and acidity is quite pronounced. Works better with food but not an especially compelling value in my view. Tasted July 2016.

Château De Ciffre Terroirs D'altitude Saint Chinian 2011 Bottle
Château De Ciffre Terroirs D'altitude Saint Chinian 2011
Languedoc, France
$14.75

Deeply coloured, full-bodied (14.5% ABV), with ripe (but not over ripe) black fruits. Black pepper, garrigue, dried meat and black olives all play a supporting role quite nicely. Very nicely done southern French wine. tasted May 2015.

Domaine Des Bacchantes Côtes Du Rhône 2012 Bottle
Domaine Des Bacchantes Côtes Du Rhône 2012
Rhône, France
$16.95

My view of this wine is a bit less enthusiastic than others. This is certainly a good CdR, but it seems just pleasant and a bit simple to me. Red fruits, ripe soft, approachable - for current consumption. Would be happier if it was $12.95 than $16.95. As it is, a bit over-priced in my view. Tasted Jan 2015.

Andreza Reserva 2011, Do Douro Bottle
Andreza Reserva 2011, Do Douro
Douro, Portugal
$16.95

Deeply coloured and darkly fruited red from the Douro. A bit of a brooding beast, with firm tannin and noticeable, if not overbearing, alcohol. Very good now, but a couple of years of sleep should improve this young red. Tasted Nov 2014.

Really fine value here from the Dao. Ripe dark fruit, and hints of pepper and spice. Just the right amount of tannin and acidity. Very nice. Tasted Oct 2014.

Cono Sur Bicicleta Viognier 2014 Bottle
Cono Sur Bicicleta Viognier 2014
Colchagua Valley, Chile
$9.95

The 2015 vintage: Not at all over the top or blowsy. Ripe but crisp, not at all sweet (only 4g sugar/L according to Vintages website). Very good white and for $10, easy peasy decision.

Elderton High Altitude Shiraz 2012, Barossa Bottle
Elderton High Altitude Shiraz 2012, Barossa
South Australia, Australia
$19.95

A bit more balanced than most Barossa shiraz, picking up some of the notes of pepper notes and herbs more associated with cooler climate syrah along with the riper dark berry notes expected from Barossa. Oak is noted without being exaggerated and there is some sweetness noted on the finish (owing to 10g/L of residual sugar, no doubt). Nice middle ground between Aussie and Rhone interpretations of syrah, though a little less sweetness would be appreciated. Picked up on sale for $16, more than reasonable. Tasted June 2015.

Cavino Grande Reserve 2008, Pdo Nemea Bottle
Cavino Grande Reserve 2008, Pdo Nemea
Peloponnese, Greece
$18.95

Medium bodied, the flavours of this Greek red are dominated by red fruit (think cherry, raspberry), with a sheen of vanilla from the oak ageing. Nicely balanced, with softening tannin and well-judged acidity. Not quite the complexity or length to score 90+pts, but an enjoyable wine. Should please with a diversity of grilled foods. Drinking now or hold a couple of years. Tasted May 2015.

Capezzana Barco Reale Di Carmignano 2012, Doc Bottle
Capezzana Barco Reale Di Carmignano 2012, Doc
Tuscany, Italy
$17.95

A lean Sangiovese-dominant red, with bright sour cherry fruit, a bit of leather and herbs. Finishes with light tannin but bracing tart acidity. A food wine if there ever was one. Tasted March 2016.
