Famille Perrin Réserve 2011, Ac Côtes Du Rhône
Rhône, France$15.95
Simple, fruity Cotes du Rhone with hints of spice and herbs beneath the red fruits. Very soft and approachable. fairly abrupt finish. Seems to me that this wine has become softer, with more residual sugar than the '10. Decent enough wine but there are better CdRs for the money. tasted Nov 2014.
Hecht & Bannier St Chinian 2011
Languedoc, France$20.75
Really fine St Chinian here from H&B. The excellent fruit is bolstered by notes of black olives, pepper, herbs and dried meats. Has really well-judged acidity and tannin. A refined, yet still authentic St Chinian for sure. Drinking very nicely now, should keep a few more years. Tasted Feb 2016.
Pérez Cruz Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2012
Maipo Valley, Chile$14.95
Well made Cab from Maipo Valley, with very ripe blackberry fruit, some notes but well-intergrated hints of oak. Widely appealing (as it was no doubt intended) and I suppose this is what passes for a decent value at the LCBO these days. Tasted August 2014.
Adega Do Monte Branco Alento Tinto 2011
Alentejo, Portugal$15.95
A well-structured Portuguese red, with flavours of red fruit, hints of spice and some unusual herbeceous notes. Quite a distinctive wine, but fine depth and complexity for the money. Well worth a detour I should say. Tasted June 2014.
Pessoa Da Vinha Reserva Douro 2010
Douro, Portugal$12.45
Wow, this is a wine of amazing density and flavour. Nothing is out of place. Fine ripe fruit, oak well in check, good backbone, and a very decent finish. Lovely stuff. And $13?? You have to be kidding me. Kudos to Steve and Sara for this great recommendation. Drink now or can hold a few years for sure. Tasted July 2014.
Dow's Late Bottled Vintage Port 2009, Dop
Douro, Portugal$18.95
As JS and DL point out, this is a bit rough around the edges at present. However, it has plenty of flavour (dried fruits like prune, raisins), decent complexity and solid depth. It is enjoyable now, but with a little age, this will gain some smoothness. Serve at about 16-17C. Should hold for 5 years or so. Tasted Nov 2014.
Figuero Tinto 4 Tempranillo 2012
Ribera Del Duero, Spain$9.90
A pleasant, well made red from Ribera Del Duero. The "4" on the label is in reference to the number of months that this wine aged in oak. The oak is well integrated and is a background player to the red fruit. Somehow, this wine left me uninspired. It just comes across as a bit lacking in character, an unnoticed face in the crowd. Maybe I was hoping for too much. Anyway, it's an enjoyable drink regardless, just not a multiple purchase for me. Tasted May 2015.
Château Des Charmes St. David's Bench Vineyard Cabernet Franc 2012, VQA St. David's Bench, Niagara On The Lake
Ontario, Canada$27.95
Medium-bodied cab franc from one of the warmest vineyards in Niagara. Good, ripe fruit (mostly in the red spectrum), a bit earthy and herbaceous and a touch of bitterness on the finish. Oak is well integrated so plays second fiddle to the franc fruit. Fairly approachable at this stage, the wine seems in a fine place for drinking now but should hold a few more years. Picked up on sale for under $23. Tasted August 2018.
Henry Of Pelham Estate Cabernet/Merlot 2012, VQA Short Hills Bench, Niagara Escarpment
Ontario, Canada$24.95
Nice texture and the fruit seems nicely ripened in this warm, dry vintage - at least, from what I can taste of the fruit....the coconut/vanilla/char flavours from the oak just dominate the palate too much. Oak lovers, rejoice! Tasted Sept 2017.
Errazuriz Max Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, Aconcagua Valley
Aconcagua Valley, Chile$19.05
Nice cabernet here. Good ripeness, with blackberry and cassis along with notable but integrated mocha from the oak. A bit heavy on the oak for my personal tastes but well-balanced enough. Very good value on sale at 14.95.
