Bastide Miraflors Vieilles Vignes Syrah/Grenache 2011, Igp Côtes Catalanes
Languedoc, France$19.95
Very ripe and oplent, with plenty of dark berry fruit backed with notes of local herbs, and balck pepper. Well-made and scores marks for typicity, but somehow didn't quite warm my spirit. Certainly no 93 point wine as Mr. Parker indicates, yet still quite enjoyable. Drink now or hold a couple of years. Tasted September 2013.
Bodegas Altanza Lealtanza Crianza 2009
Rioja, Spain$17.95
A pleasant, medium-bodied Rioja, with decent if unexceptional flavours in the red fruit spectrum. interestingly, unlike JS, I don't perceive much oak in this wine and I am quite sensitive to that (bottle variation?). Decent acidity and tannin and just an average finish. Good wine, but a bit boring to be honest. Tasted July 2014.
Crasto Vinho Tinto 2011, Doc Douro
Portugal$17.49
Yet again, Quinta do Crasto has produced a super red at a great price. The depth of the flavours is impressive with fine tannin and a very good finish. Authentic Portuguese wine, worthy of multiple purchase. Tasted Nov 13.
La Ferme Du Mont Le Ponnant Côtes Du Rhône Villages 2011
Rhône, France$0.00
Instantly recognizably Cotes du Rhone, with ripe red fruits, loads of local herbs, and black pepper. Fine complexity for the price, this red is very smooth and appoachable now, with sufficient structure for short-term (up to 3 years) of cellaring. But, while this wine will keep, why bother? This is simply a joy to taste now. There are alot of $30+ Chateauneufs that are inferior to this. Tasted July 2013.
Domaine De La Gravelle Vieilles Vignes Muscadet Sèvre Et Maine 2011, Ac, Sur Lie
Loire, France$10.25
Crisp, refreshing (especially on a 34C day!), with citrus notes (lemon in particular) and fine acidity. Any residual sugar goes almost unnoticed wtih the acidity. Really good value (I think it was about $14 when initially released). Tasted June 2014.
Emiliana Adobe Reserva Merlot 2011, Rapel Valley
Rapel Valley, Chile$13.00
Soft, approachable merlot (with 15% syrah). Red berry fruit with notable herbeceous notes and a bit hollow tasting which might indicate high yields. Actually, kind of reminds me of an inexpensive Niagara red. Certainly a decent wine, but not particularly memorable ....and just average value. Drink now. Tasted Sept 2013.
Château De Panigon 2010, Ac Médoc
Bordeaux, France$19.95
A ripe but balanced left bank Bordeaux with noted but well integrated ok. Plummy red fruit, and hints of coffee and cedar. Tannin is pleasantly firm and the finish is good. Not the depth or complexity if classified growths but this is an authentic Bordeaux and a decent value consider its origin. Drinking nicely now, should keep another couple of years. Tasted April 2015.
Château De Ventenac Grand Réserve Cabardès 2009
Languedoc, France$15.25
Cab-Merlot-Syrah blend. Quite dry, with notes of dried sour cherries, black tea and herbs. Solid, dry finish with some tannin noted but not obtrusive. Quite a nicely made wine, my only minor quibble being that it lacks a bit of regional character. Picked up on sale at $15.25. a good value at that price. Tasted Dec 2013.
Caparzo Brunello Di Montalcino 2008, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$44.95
Lighter and leaner than most Brunello (the vintage?), this Caparzo is Chianti Classico in weight and flavours. Sour cherry fruit, tart cranberries and hints of spice, but they is little in the way of oxidative fruit - this is quite fresh, even at nearly 10 years of age. Wood is but a minor feature. Once one gets past the expectations of a bigger richer wine, there is much to appreciate here. Complex, long finishing and food friendly. Fine current drinking and should hold for a few more years. Tasted Jul 2018.
Capezzana Barco Reale Di Carmignano 2010
Tuscany, Italy$17.95
Another fine offering from Capezzana. Bright sour cherry fruit, with notes of herbs and earthiness. The Sangivoese character really shines through here. Finishes with pleasant tartness, fine acidity and light but firm tannin. Not quite the value it was in past years (thanks to the additional $1 LCBO gouge) but a worthy purchase in Tuscan red. Tasted nov 2013.
