Terredora Fiano Di Avellino 2010, Docg
Campania, Italy$18.95
Fresh, clean, with a complex array of flavours ranging from citrus fruit, to peaches and even a touch of grass (not the type you smoke!). Long finishing with brisk acidity. Made a great match for traditonal turkey Thanksgiving dinner. Agree with JS and DL that this would show even better with a bit of bottle age but most enjoyable now. The WS review is, as usual, unreliable. Tasted Oct 2012.
La Velona Rosso Di Montalcino 2009
Tuscany, Italy$17.95
Light-medium bodied, with lively red fruits (think cherries), supported by subtle notes of earth and spice, and finishing with fine acidity and light tannin. Not especially complex but very Tuscan, very satisfying. For near-term enjoyment (the next couple of years). My kinda red. Tasted August 2012.
Cennatoio Oro Chianti Classico 2009, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$17.35
Medium to lighter bodied red as one would expect from a normale Chianti Classico. Bright red cherry fruit with good strucutre and lively acidity. Pure Tuscany. No over-manipulation, just an honest to goodness Chianti. Most enjoyable. Tasted March 2013.
Di Majo Norante Contado Riserva Aglianico Del Molise 2009, Doc Molise
Italy$15.75
Dark, richly fruited red from southern Italy. Notes of sour cherries, herbs, and spice. Fairly tight and tannic, with a good backbone of acidity. Lots going on here, but like the '07, I think that this needs a bit of time to settle down. A great bargain cellar selection for 3-5 years down the road. Tasted Sept 2012.
Château De Galifay Cairanne Côtes Du Rhône Villages 2010, Ac, Rhône, France
Rhône, France$12.75
Very ripe, full-bodied Cotes du Rhone. Soft, approachable, displaying notes of blueberries, supported by notes of herbs. Some heat and alcohol is noticeable on the finish, but this is a solid red all in all. For drinking over the next few years. Tasted Oct 2012.
Bodegas Castaño Hécula Monastrell 2009, Do Yecla
Spain$12.60
Loaded with rustic ripe fruit, herbs, and hints of meat. Firm and full-bodied, with very good length. At $12, a great choice for a house wine if you are so inclined. Nice recommendation by the WA crew. Tasted March 2013.
Dei Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano 2008
Tuscany, Italy$27.95
Some medicinal aromas on first whiff are quickly replaced by very pronounced floral aromas. On the palate, medium-bodied with vivid red fruits, and vibrant acidity. Finishes with considerable tannin. Not yet ready for prime-time, this shows excellent promise. Give it three years minimum, then should hold through 2020. Tasted Oct 2012.
Marchesi Di Barolo La Tradizione Barolo 2006
Piedmont, Italy$38.95
Relatively pale red in colour, this exhibits aromas of flowers and herbs. Dry, earthy flavours of red cherries, a touch of spice, finishing with tart sour cherries and some fine tannin and acidity. Lingers nicely on the palate. While fine with a decant now, 2-3 years in the cellar would be beneficial. A good barolo for the money. Tasted oct 2012.
Pierre Amadieu La Grangelière Vacqueyras 2010
Rhône, France$19.95
Black fruit, supplemented by herbs, smoke and black pepper (the syrah seems to be making a statement here). Still a bit blunt, I suspect that this will never quite mellow. Thins a bit on the finish with a touch of astringency. Still, a fine, representative red from the south Rhone. Tasted jan 2016.
Quinta Das Camélias Reserva 2009, Doc Dão
Dão, Portugal$13.95
Deeply coloured with plenty of black fruit, spice, and an unusual wild note of evergreen (as Mr. Lawrason points out). Alot of depth for not much cash, this certainly won;t be everyone's cup of tea, but I really enjoyed it uniqure character. Drinkable now or hold a few years. Tasted March 2013.
