Heinrich Blaufränkisch 2015, Burgenland
Austria$25.15
Very interesting wine. Light, juicy and complex. Black olive and meaty/funk, smokey, brambly fruit, and some greenness. Enjoyed three of the four times tasted, if not for that might have scored it slightly higher. Worth a try if you've never had a blaufrankish (it was the first and thus far one of the best that ive tried). In some ways similiar to good quality morgon
Marchesi Incisa Della Rocchetta Sant'emiliano 2014, Barbera D'asti
Piedmont, Italy$29.45
Fruit is pure and the acidity and tannin structure are BALANCED. Medium, vibrant and easy, beautiful to drink on its own but with enough weight, complexity and structure to pair with a variety of dishes.
Tetramythos Kalavryta 2015
Greece$17.05
Another hit from this house. This vintage has (if my memory serves) a tad less body, but delivers the same rustic, elegant and savory character as the 2014. This is outstanding, though i do have a bit of a hard time with so many people in the wine world dubbing this a "greek beaujolais". It does bring a juiciness and drinkability factor that one may find in a good beaujolais, but it is accompanied with leather and savory notes that i find are more reminiscent of poulsard or trousseau from the jura (maybe even a tad of young/unoaked sangiovese or pinot character). Among (if not THE) best <20.
Stratus Moyer Road Rr1 Riesling 2015, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$22.15
Racy acidity, slight gassy hint and lots of fruit, easy and delicious
Elian Da Ros Le Vin Est Une Fête 2015, Côtes Du Marmandais
Southwest, France$22.30
The can franc stands out in this wine, but rounded out through blending. Loads of pepper and pure fruit, elegant and easy, but with substance. A no-brainer
Georges Descombes Morgon Vieilles Vignes 2013, Morgon
Beaujolais, France$36.00
Fantastic morgon, juicy and vibrant, spicy and brambly fruit dominate, but it is the mouthfeel and simple pleasure of drinking that this invokes that will one one over. Its a shame that the prices of these wines keep rising. A style you can drink all day and all night, chilled if that's what you prefer.
A.A. Badenhorst Family Red Blend 2014
Western Cape, South Africa$41.50
Syrah dominates the nose here, teetering between new world and northern rhone style. This wine is fresh and juicy, new world fruit and old world(ish) balance. That said it does not bring the complexity or savory side that one should expect from 40$ syrah.
Château Cambon Beaujolais 2016
Beaujolais, France$24.00
Nice and super easy drinking beaujolais, red bramble and some ongoing ferment quality.
Inama Carmenère Piu 2014
Veneto, Italy$22.75
Rich and typical of modern reds of veneto. Spicy and lush with loads of dark fruit. Guilty pleasure stuff
Tetramythos Malagousia 2015, Pgi Achaia
Peloponnese, Greece$17.95
Round mouthfeel full of citrus fruit and good acidity. Solid
