Convento San Francisco Special Selection Reserva 2005, Do Ribera Del Duero
Ribera Del Duero, Spain$33.00
This wine was initially very confusing. There was still lots of tannin left, and the flavor profile was very dry and dusty. it came into its own once paired up with food, specifically cured meat. The fat and the salt really elevated the flavor profile and made it very nice to drink.
the style was most definitely Spanish, and the flavor was most definitely aged. And still has a couple of years left in it.
Graham's Late Bottled Vintage Port 2009, Douro Valley
Portugal$17.95
This is a really sensational port for the price. It has a lovely, sweet nose which does not contain some of the harsh or overpowering notes that can be imparted by the fortifying liquor. The ,mouth feel is silky and luxurious with flavour of chocolate and plums complimented by some floral notes.
Santa Carolina Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2014, Colchagua Valley
Colchagua Valley, Chile$13.95
A nice, simple red. The aromas are balanced with notes of oak, blackberries, cherries and leather. The taste is not as deep as the nose - but this pairs well with food. I just think that there are better wines available at the same price (particularly primitivos, if you want a fruit forward wine)
Rustenberg John X Merriman 2013, Wo Simonsberg Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch, South Africa$24.95
After waiting a while longer, this wine was much smoother. A little age suited it well.
Original review:
Classic Bordeaux taste at South African prices. Flavours of blackberries and earth permeate this deeply flavoured wine. Needs to be open for a few hours before drinking, or age for a few more years.
Southern Right Pinotage 2015, Hemel En Aarde
Walker Bay, South Africa$34.95
Absolutely the best pinotage I have ever had. Incredibly expressive floral nose with violets, blackberries and spices. Pallete was rustic, but refined and had a very large presence. Will buy again.
Malivoire Small Lot Gamay 2016, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$19.95
Very fruity and light, with an almost carbonated quality on the palette and high acidity. This should be served with food. When it all comes down to it, the wine appeared very well made - it just didn't match our tastes.
