Thelema Mountain Red 2012, Western Cape Bottle
Thelema Mountain Red 2012, Western Cape
Stellenbosch, South Africa
$13.45

A multi-varietal blend from Stellenbosch. Remarkable complexity and structure for a sub-$13 wine. A bit of oak upfront but with finely ripened fruit, herbs and pepper. Really impressive for the money, and even a bit better than the '11. Along with Portugal, South Africa is producing some super values in red wine. Certainly worth buying more than a single bottle. Tasted Oct 2015.

Villa Cafaggio Chianti Classico 2011, Docg Bottle
Villa Cafaggio Chianti Classico 2011, Docg
Tuscany, Italy
$21.95

Leans more toward a more traditional (which s not to say, bottle in a basket) style Chianti. Crisp acidity, red and black cherry fruit and some leathery notes. Perhaps lacks a bit of the charm of some Chiantis but is a fine match to any tomato-based Italian cuisine. Tasted April 2016.

Gérard Bertrand Saint Chinian Syrah/Mourvèdre 2011, Ap Bottle
Gérard Bertrand Saint Chinian Syrah/Mourvèdre 2011, Ap
Languedoc, France
$17.95

A bit of a disappointment here. Some decent blackberry fruit and pepper marred by the slightly off taste (skunky as DL aptly puts it) of used coffee grounds. There is enough good flavour here to provide some pleasure but thopse odd flavours really detract....and I do love the distinctiveness of thes wines of the south of France, but not when they are wierd). Tasted Feb 2015.

Les Dolia Laudun Côtes Du Rhône Villages 2012, Ac Bottle
Les Dolia Laudun Côtes Du Rhône Villages 2012, Ac
Rhône, France
$18.95

What a fine CdR Villages here. Herb-infused red fruit, silky tannin, black pepper and cured meats. Complex and long finishing. Delicious stuff and one of the better CdRs under $20 that I have had n the last few years. Drinking well now. Tasted Aug 2016.

Sander Pinot Blanc Trocken 2013, Qualitätswein Bottle
Sander Pinot Blanc Trocken 2013, Qualitätswein
Pfalz, Germany
$15.95

Riper than I was expecting. I picked up alot of tropical fruits on the nose. Flavours follow through on that vein, along with apple and some lemony notes. Very nice balance between the residual sugar (6g/L) and acidity. Really delicious and worthy of multiple bottle purchase, especially given the $16 price tag. Tasted May 2015....restasted July 2015 with consistent notes. Yummy good value.

Leone De Castris Maiana Salice Salentino 2013, Doc Bottle
Leone De Castris Maiana Salice Salentino 2013, Doc
Puglia, Italy
$14.95

A big ripe, verging on over-ripe rustic red here from the Puglia region. Red cherries, leather, dried fruiot and soft tannin. Seems to me a bit more residual sugar (13g/L) than in prior years, at least by my palate. I have always enjoyed this wine but I hope this doesn't veer into the cheap Cali Zinfandel cherry-cola type of wine in future vintages. As it is now, a good value wine for bbq fare. Tasting june 2015.

Corino Dolcetto D'alba 2013, Doc Bottle
Corino Dolcetto D'alba 2013, Doc
Piedmont, Italy
$15.75

Somewhat oxidative, high acid Dolcetto. The fruit seems to straddle the zone between red and dark fruits, yet is not particularly vibrant. A bit of a medicinal note along with some bitterness. If all of this sounds off-putting, it is not. The wine is good, just not particularly compelling. Decent enough value on sale at under $16. Tasted Oct 2015.

Mula Velha Premium Tinto 2012, Alentejo Bottle
Mula Velha Premium Tinto 2012, Alentejo
Alentejo, Portugal
$15.95

Full-bodied, very ripe, yet still has noted acidity. Seems just a bit out of balance to me, but still has remarkable density for the price. Certainly worth a try at the price. Buy two: One to try now, hold one for three years to see if the balance improves. Portugal again delivers fine value.

Alvaro Castro Red 2011, Doc Dão

Fine Dao here from Alvaro Castro, fully mature at 7 years of age. Very ripe and meaty, with soft tannin. Decant for sediment (or sentiment as the case may be). Tasted Nov 2018.

Xavier Ventoux 2012, Ap Bottle
Xavier Ventoux 2012, Ap
Rhône, France
$16.95

Very typical southern French wine. Ripe (but not over ripe) fruit, black pepper, and herbs. Quite approachable but enough tannin to keep the wine from being flabby. Not overly complex, but well made and authentic. Reasonably priced. tasted June 2015.
