Château De Gourgazaud Cuvée Mathilde Minervois 2011, Ac
Languedoc, France$14.95
Ripe, fruity Minervois with dark berry fruit, hints of black olives and black pepper. Quite approachable and appealing, a no nonsense red for current consumption. An easy wine to like. Quite fairly priced at $15. Tasted Sept 2014.
Massaya Classic Red 2011, Bekaa Valley
Lebanon, World$15.95
Flavours remind me of a Cotes du Rhone (as JS points out). Earthy, slightly herbal and peppery, with notes of dried fruit and cherry. Some firm tannin on the finish. Vintages catalogue states $15.95 but this is being sold for $12.80, which is super value. A bit rough around the edges, but I really liked the authenticity of this wine. Back for more. Tasted June 2014.
Perle De Roseline Rouge 2015, Côtes De Provence
Provence, France$13.75
A Cabernet-Syrah blend from Provence. This is a fairly light weight wine for such a warm climate, yet no shortage of flavour here. Light tannin, fresh acidity and bright red fruits with hints of herbs and pepper. Not super complex but I like the flavours. Nicely made, a fine food wine and a very good value on sale at under $14. Tasted nov 2018.
La Cartuja Tinto 2012
Priorat, Spain$14.75
The 2011 vintage, picked up at Premier Wines in Buffalo for $14.95. Very ripe, veering on over-ripeness with notes of dark fruit, prunes and hints of spice. Quite mouth-filling and the oak is in fine balance. Long finish. Good value for Priorat (or anywhere for that matter). As an added bonus, the LCBO will refund me 20 cents for a bottle bought elsewhere! Or is it the Beer Store. Tasted July 2014.
Mas De Montagnes 2010, Cotes Du Roussillon Villages
Languedoc, France$6.30
A pleasant, straight forward red from the Roussillon. Notes of red fruit, smoke, pepper, and hints of herbs. Not particularly deep fruit or complex, but good regional authenticiy. A decent buy given the prices these days at the LCBO. Tasted March 2014.
Tom De Baton 2011, Casal De Loivos, Doc Douro
Douro, Portugal$16.95
A very approachable unoaked red from the Duoro. Just medium bodied, with bright red fruits, with just a hint of spice. Not particularly complex, but nicely made and very easy to enjoy. A relative bargain these days at Vintages, and as such, well worth seeking out. Tasted Feb 2014.
Lan Crianza 2010
Rioja, Spain$15.95
A reasonable priced (by LCBO standards) red from the Rioja. Medium bodied, with well-defined flavours in the red fruit spectrum. Oak is noted but well-integrated, finishing with a pleasant hint of tart red fruit. I think a shade behind the '09 that I tasted last fall, but still a worthy purchase. For current/short-term consumption. Tasted March 2014.
Santa Carolina Merlot Reserva 2012, Colchagua Valley
Colchagua Valley, Chile$12.95
The nose is a bit disappointing, with muted notes of light fruit and veges. Yet, the flavours are more impressive. Lively red fruits, no overripeness, with hints of spice and vanilla. Nice balance of fruit and tannin. No Petrus, of course (not that I can afford to taste a Petrus!) but a very good red for not much money. On sale until late May/15 at $10.95, I should say this is worthy of multiple bottle purchase. Nice rec by ST. Tasted April 2015.
Pepin Condé Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, Wo Coastal Region
Stellenbosch, South Africa$15.95
Approachable cab from South Africa. Ripe fruit, with notes of iodine, and hints of herbs. Tannin and acidity are well-judged and oak is in the background . The flavour profile is a bit distinctive, but in a good way. Very well made and alot of wine for $16. Tasted May 2014.
Goats Do Roam White 2013, Coastal Region
Western Cape, South Africa$11.95
Clean, refreshing white from South Africa. Citrus flavours, with hints of spice and flint. The acidity keeps the wine balanced and food friendly. Straight forward, no frills wine that is excellent value at $12. Tasted Sep 2014.
