Barão De Vilar Feuerheerd's Tinto 2014, Doc Douro
Douro, Portugal$11.75
I tried to take the bottle out of the "bag" that it is packaged in, to see the label. But, wait, the bag is glued to the bottle! The bag IS the label! DUH! Hmmm, It is different I suppose. What is IN the bottle is a, of course, most important and what you will find is fresh and lively red, with brisk acidity and light tannin. Immediately identifiable as the Douro. For near term consumption (the next 12-18 months). Very nice value. Tasted Dec 2016.
Ferraton Père & Fils Samorëns Côtes Du Rhône 2014, Ac
Rhône, France$11.75
Agree with the WA crew, this is a spot-on CdR, full of character and drinkability. Easy purchase for $16, Ill buy a few more for summer bbqs. Tasted April 2017.
Beyra Vinhos De Altitude Red 2014, Doc Beira Interior
Portugal$12.95
Soft, easy-going tempranillo-dominated red. Not particularly complex, but good quality red fruits, with little to no oak. All too easy to quaff, and you could do a lot worse for your $13. Fine value indeed. Tasted May 2017.
Rocca Di Montemassi Le Focaie 2014
Tuscany, Italy$11.75
Apparently, this red is 100% Sangiovese. While this does not display much Sangiovese or Tuscan character, it is a well made and delicious wine. Very ripe, in fact showing hints of over-ripeness, wine dark red cherry fruit and hints if cocoa. Really, this could be from anywhere. However, at $16, the enjoyment value I high. Recommended. Tasted April 2017.
Basciano Chianti Rufina 2013, Docg
Tuscany, Italy$15.95
A genuine chianti here, with no resorting to heavy extraction or overpowering oak. Tart red fruit and brisk acidity just a one would hope for in a modestly priced Chianti (this one from the Rufina region). Not great depth or complexity, just a good measure of pleasure. Nice. Tasted May 2017.
Honoro Vera Monastrell 2015, Dop Jumilla
Murcia, Spain$13.95
Very ripe, fruity Monastrell (aka Mourvedre). Blueberry fruit, almost jammy (but not quite over the top) dominates with some light tannin and welcome acidity on the finish. Wood is a minor player here. Superb value and a very nice rec by David and Michael. Tasted Feb 2017.
Santa Julia Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
Mendoza, Argentina$9.95
A bit lean and herbal, much like some Niagara reds. Little cabernet character at all and a fairly abrupt finish. Reminds me why I ante up the extra few bucks for superior wines. ON sale for $11.95 and not worth a penny more than that. tasted May 2017.
Château D'or Et De Gueules Les Cimels 2013, Ac Costières De Nîmes
Rhône, France$15.95
While no model of refinement, this is a tasty south French red. The syrah really takes front stage for me, with plenty of spice/pepper-infused black fruit. A bit lean and just medium bodied, very fresh and lively. A bit rough and rustic, but all the more charming for it. Easy purchase. Tasted March 2017.
Château Des Demoiselles 2014, Ac Castillon Côtes De Bordeaux
Bordeaux, France$17.95
A cool climate, slightly lean Merlot-based right bank for the good 2014 vintage. Herbal notes mixed in with tart fruit, and a bit of green pepper. Reminds me of a Niagara red but enough ripeness a complexity to raise this above most similarly price Niagara reds. A clear step up from the '11, though I'd like to see a bit more ripeness. Tasted July 2019.
Vineland Estates Cabernet Franc 2015, Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$13.95
A fresh, light-medium bodied cab franc with herbal-tinged red fruits, low tannin and a relatively short-finish. The decent '15 vintage has helped keep the nasty vegetal side of this variety at bay. Straightforward red that is reasonably priced and better than most in Niagara at the price. Nice warm day sipper. Chill a bit before serving. Tasted June 2017.
