Roche Bastide Côtes Du Rhône 2012 Bottle
Roche Bastide Côtes Du Rhône 2012
Rhône, France
$12.15

Soft, mild, inoffensive are the descriptors that come to mind in tasting this wine. Where's the spice, bright fruit, structure that one finds in better examples from the CdR? Easy enough to drink but all in all, rather boring. This would be acceptable at $11, not at nearly $15. Tasted Sept 2014.

Castellani Filicheto Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano 2010 Bottle
Castellani Filicheto Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano 2010
Tuscany, Italy
$0.00

Again this vintage, Castellani has fashioned an authentic Vino Nobile, with no resorting to heavy handed oak treatment or other wine making tricks. Fine red fruit, vibrant acidity and decent structure. Unfortunately, $2 higher than previous vintages courtesy of the wine monopoly but still represents decent value. For drinking in the next 3 years or so. Tasted Oct 2014.

Quinta Da Ponte Pedrinha 2012 Bottle
Quinta Da Ponte Pedrinha 2012
Portugal
$13.75

Re-tasted March 2017: A bit softer and more tart red fruit than the last tasting. Holding on to the fruit, but a simple red. 86 pts this time, so let's average the two.
Original Note:
Fresh and spicy, with bright red fruits and foresty notes (think evergreens). Not particularly complex (the '08 was superior) but a decent value in genuine Portuguese red. 88 pts. Tasted March 2015.

Mezzomondo Negroamaro 2013, Salento, Puglia Bottle
Mezzomondo Negroamaro 2013, Salento, Puglia
Puglia, Italy
$8.95

As always, a simple southern Italian red. Straightforward, no BS wine with ripe jammy fruit in a typically rustic style. Something seems to have changed compared to prior years -this vintage, the wine came off as being a bit sweet. A quick look on the LCBO site reveals that this wine a 12g/L residual sugar. Was it this sweet in prior vintages? Serve with a decent chill to tone down that sweetness. Not really my style. Getting a bit too commercial. Tasted Nov 2014.

Benziger Chardonnay 2012, Sonoma County Bottle
Benziger Chardonnay 2012, Sonoma County
California, Usa
$19.95

A rather lean, restrained chardonnay from Benziger here. Crisp acidity and predominantly citrus flavours. Not alot of charm in this wine, I'm afraid. Overpriced for what it is in my mind. Tasted Oct 2012.

Espiritu De Argentina Classic Bonarda 2013 Bottle
Espiritu De Argentina Classic Bonarda 2013
Mendoza, Argentina
$11.75

A fairly lean red at first sip, but gains in fullness on the finisg, with crisp red fruit, notable herbeceousness, and some spice. Quite similar to a Niagara cabernet franc. Ok, on its own, but this actually worked really well with a spicy Cuban ground beef dish. Picked up on sale for $12, very reasonable value at that price. tasted July 2015.

Château Peynaud 2009, Ac Bordeaux Supérieure

Medium bodied, authentic red Bordeaux. Red berry fruit, pleasantly herbaceous, with hints of wood. Balanced and well made. Well priced, especially for those who gasp at the price of classified growths. Drinking well now. Tasted Oct 2014.

A very easy to like Faugeres. Maturing now, with soft raspberry/cherry fruit and hints of herbs. A bit of oak and acidity on the finish. Good match for simple bbq foods. For near term consumption. Tasted August 016.

Very soft, approachable Rioja red. Simple red fruits with noted oak and an average finish. Fails to excite, actually rather boring. Tasted nov 2014.

Moris Morellino Di Scansano 2012, Docg Bottle
Moris Morellino Di Scansano 2012, Docg
Tuscany, Italy
$16.25

Simple, straighforward red from Tuscany. Pleasant, if unexceptional red cherry fruit, a bit candied in fact. Finshes with relatively low acidity (esp for Sangiovese) and mild tannin. Quaffable, nothing more. Over priced at its original $19.95 price tag, even a bit of a stretch at the currrent $16. Drnk now. Tasted March 2015.
