Pinyolet Garnacha 2010, Do Montsant
Catalonia, Spain$18.95
Full-on, ripe approachable garnacha. Leans toward the red fruit flavours spectrum, with notes of spice and a bit of funk. Has more than a little in common with a Cotes du Rhone red. Fairly priced. Tasted May 2012.
Giacosa Fratelli Madonna Como Dolcetto D'alba 2010, Doc Piedmont
Piedmont, Italy$15.95
Quite structured for a Dolcetto. Boldly fruited with flavours of cherries, blueberries and lightly medicinal notes. Lingering finish. Can keep for a few years for sure, but I enjoyed its vibrancy for current consumption. For those who dismiss Dolcetto as a light, sissy wine, this is a fine little value that will be a real eye-opener. Tasted Oct 2012.
Umani Ronchi Montipagano Montepulciano D'abruzzo 2010, Doc
Abruzzo, Italy$13.95
Simple red, with red cherry and cranberry fruit and no oak to speak of. Not much depth or length here to my palate. Actually, a bit boring. Oh well, it was only $14. Drink now. Tasted June 2012.
Pierre Henri Morel Signargues Côtes Du Rhône Villages 2009, Ac
Rhône, France$15.95
Smooth and approachable, this Cotes du Rhone offers plenty of red fruit, supported by notes of herbs and spice. Finishes with a slightly unusual (though not unpleasant) liquerish note. Still, quite a mouthful for $16. Tasted July 2012.
Poggiotondo Brunello Di Montalcino 2006
Tuscany, Italy$39.95
An evolved and traditional style of Brunello here. Along with the sour cherry fruits are notes of slightly earthy dried fruits leather and hints of old wood. Quite silky smooth and complex, with a lingering finish. While not up there with the upper echelon Brunello producers, this is a fine Tuscan red and decent values (as far as BdM goes, that is). Drink now or over the next few years. Tasted Dec 2014.
Domaine Des Fées Côtes Du Rhône 2010, Ac, Unfiltered
Rhône, France$14.95
Full-bodied red from the Cotes du Rhone. Ripe dark berry fruit, dense and mouth-filling. Earthy with typical notes or local herbs and a smooth, inviting texture. The wine just glides over the palate. No oak influence, just pure Rhone. At $15, an excellent value and worthy of multiple bottle purchase. Drink now or can be held for a few years. Tasted June 2012.
Laurence Feraud Plan Pegau 2010, Rhone
Rhône, France$15.05
Very typical south Rhone blend, with notably ripe red fruits, hints of black pepper and local herbs. Solid finish with even a faint hint of sweetness, though I that is more due to the ripeness of the fruit than much residual sugar. Needs a bit more complexity and structure to rate higher but a good value in any case. Tasted March 2013.
Carpineto Chianti Classico 2010
Tuscany, Italy$19.95
My notes are for the '09, picked up at Marketview wines in Rochester for $13.99. Medium-to medium-light bodied, with pure, vibrant cherry/currant fruit. A bit earthy, with zesty acidity and fine tannin. Oak is virtually invisible. In short, what I expect in a Chianti. A fine authentic Tuscan red at a great price. Wonder why the LCBO can't price it so cheaply (oh yeah, its a monopoly, it doesn't have to be cheap). Tasted Dec 2012.
Château D'anglès La Clape Classique Syrah/Grenache/Mourvèdre 2007, Ac Languedoc
Languedoc, France$14.95
Pleasant ripe red fruit, ably backed by local herbs and spice. Good depth, mature, with fine regional character. Perhaps a bit rough around the edges but most enjoyable. for near-term consumption. More than fairly priced. Tasted August 2012.
Ippolito 1845 Liber Pater Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore 2009, Doc
Calabria, Italy$13.95
Loaded with southern Italian charm and character, this Calabrian red exhibits flavours of dried red fruits, and herbs with well-integrated tannin and acidity. The finish is long and firm. One heck of alot of wine for $14, worthy of multiple bottle purchase. Drink now or can easily hold for a few years. Tasted August 2012.
