Château Agnel Cuvée Philippe Minervois 2009, Ac
Languedoc, France$12.75
At first sip, there was absolutely no doubt about the origin of this wine. Loaded with dark berry fruit, local herbs, black olives. pepper etc. Quite complex and very approachable. A wonderful authentic expression of the region. A little more length would have pushed this over 90pts, but for $15.95, who's complaining? Super value. drink now or over the next couple of years. Tasted April 2013.
Jean Philippe Janoueix L'evidence 2011
Bordeaux, France$7.95
The $7.95 price is the LCBO blow-out price. Originally in the $14 range I believe. A shame that this has been discontinued, a very respectable and representative red Bordeaux.
Perez Cruz Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2010, Maipo Valley (375ml)
Maipo Valley, Chile$8.95
Fairly full-bodied, with rip dark berry fruit, hints of cassis and herbs. A bit sweet, though thankfully not cloying. Finish is slightly short. A pleasant red designed to please the "crowd". Tasted Nov 2013 from the 375ml bottle.
Statti Lamezia Rosso 2011, Doc
Calabria, Italy$12.75
Nicely made red from southern Italy, with good complexity for the price. Red cherry flavours backed by ample notes of herbs and spice (which call to mind the south of France). Should match nicely with a grilled meat. For drinking over the next few years. Tasted May 2013.
Cline Ancient Vines Mourvèdre 2011, Contra Costa County
California, Usa$16.75
Shows some of the herbal, spicey, earthy notes that one associates with reds from the Cotes du Rhone. On the other hand, there are slightly sweet, confected notes as well belaying its Cali roots. Oak is notable, though I didn't fine it overpowering. While not quite my style of wine, this was still quite enjoyable both on its own and especially with BBQ'd fare. Fans of the style with surely enjoy this. Tasted Aug 2013.
Viña San Esteban In Situ Winemaker's Selection Carmenère 2010, Aconcagua
Chile$15.95
A rare sojourn for me into new world wines...and a worthwhile detour it was. Generously fruited carmenere, with pleasant spice and (thankfully) no over-dose of green pepper/spinach sometimes associated with this grape. Finish is only average but a very good wine at the price. Certainly worth a try. Tasted May 2013.
Les Vignes Bila Haut Côtes Du Roussillon Villages 2011, Ac
Languedoc, France$15.95
Delicious Roussillon red. Brimming with dark berry fruit, pepper and local herbs, with hints of black olives. Approachable, with a lingering finish. Simply a great value for current drinking. Tasted June 2013.
Creekside Laura's Red 2010, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Ontario, Canada$19.95
Certainly a well-made red, with ripe red fruit, and plenty of chocolate and coconut flavours from the generous oak treatment. While I wouldn't say the wine is over-oaked, I do find that the oak obscures much of regional character that the wine may have had. If blind tasting this, I would never has guess Niagara (maybe Rioja, but not Niagara). Enjoyable wine, but not quite to my tastes. Picked up on sale at Queens Quay for $14.25. Tasted July 2014.
Ippolito 1845 Liber Pater Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore 2010, Doc
Calabria, Italy$14.95
The only negative on this wine is that our wine monoploy has risen the price by $1. Whatever, like the '09, this is an excellent, authentic southern Italian red. Plenty of dried red fruit, herbs , with a touch of sour cherries and tannin on the finish. Simply a stellar buy and I will pick up another bottle of two. Tasted September 2013.
Caparzo Rosso Di Montalcino 2010
Tuscany, Italy$19.95
Typical Sangiovese flavours or sour cherry fruit, hints of dry earth and finishing with hints of vanilla. Nothing really wrong with the wine, just seems a bit light and simple, especially for the vintage and the $20 price tag. Tasted Feb 2014.
