éric Texier Vaison La Romaine Côtes De Rhône Villages 2007, Ac
Rhône, France$13.95
Smooth, approachable, with plenty of ripe fruit, all supported by typical notes of local herbs and black pepper. Really great value at about $14. Just love those Cotes du Rhone reds.
Quinta Dos Roques Vinho Tinto 2007, Doc Dão
Dão, Portugal$18.95
A very typically Portuguese red (in the best sense), with notes of wild berry, earth with well-judged oak. Not especially complex, but very enjoyable for current consumption or short t-erm cellaring. Good price, too.
Domaine Les Yeuses Les épices Syrah 2008, Vins De Pays D'oc
Languedoc, France$15.95
Similar to the '07, plenty of black pepper and spice (hence the name!), along with meat and some dark berry fruit. Like the '07, I enjoyed this wine but found it just a bit lacking in fruit and depth. With the $2 price increase, not the compelling value it was but still fairly priced. Drink now. Tasted Oct '11/
Mas Des Bressades Cuvée Tradition Blanc 2010, Ac Costières De Nîmes
Rhône, France$14.95
Notes of nectarine/peach, with hints of lemon. Slightly chalky, with note of lanolin on the finish. Quite viscous in texture, almost like a late hares twine, but this is a dry wine. Fine value. Tasted December 2011.
Bonterra Chardonnay 2010, Mendocino County, Organic Wine
California, Usa$19.95
Notes on the 2011 vintage. While I never tasted the 2010, this '11 seems in complete contrast. Lean, acidic, and a bit thin. This organic Chard seems more akin to a Niagara white in a weak vintage. A little bitter on the short finish. $13.99 in Pennsylvania. Tasted Feb 2013.
Delas Frères Saint Esprit Côtes Du Rhône 2009, Ac
Rhône, France$16.95
Ripe dark berry fruit supported by ample spice and herbs and balancing acidity. A bit firm at the moment, so could use another year or two, but still delicious now. In short, a very fine value in Cotes du Rhone.
Ramos Pinto Duas Quintas 2009, Doc Douro
Douro, Portugal$14.75
Once again in this vintage, Duas Quintas is a fine Portuguese red. Earthy dark fruit with barely detectable oak and a solid structure. Complexity and depth is above the price point. Fine to drink now, better in a year or two. Price is unfortunately up $1 but still worth the $17 price tag.
Tinto Da Anfora 2009, Alentejano
Portugal$12.05
Medium-bodied red here from Portugal. Flavours of dried red fruits (cherries, cranberries) with a light spicy accent. Not the depth of Crasto, for example, but nice complexity and structure for a $12 wine. Even has a good finish. A great weekday wine when short of cash...or even when not... Tasted May 2012.
Château Rochecolombe Côtes Du Rhône 2009, Ac
Rhône, France$14.95
Spot-on Cotes du Rhone, with ripe, sweet fruit, local herbs and pepper. All too easy to drink, but with enough backbone to keep it from tasting flabby. A lingering finish. Much more wine than one might expect for $15. Tasted Dec 2011.
Capezzana Barco Reale Di Carmignano 2008
Tuscany, Italy$17.95
Surprisingly firm for an entry-level wine. Complex notes of red cherries, herbs and tea. Firm acidity and noted tannin on the long finish. While very nice now, I suspect that this will show even better toward the end of 2013 and hold for a couple of years after that. As always, a fine red with genuine Tuscan character from Capezzana. Great value to boot. Tasted Feb 2012.
